I was calibrating and qualifying a smaller version of one of these for my job in pharma, before I went into aerospace, and we could use it to measure down to half a percent, web coating thickness for our drug matrix in adhesive.

Until recently I lived between Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC and would visit Canada at least once per month. For the last few years it has been obvious to me that the large yellow panels you have no choice but to drive between when approaching the US border checkpoint are X-ray machines. Like it or not, there is no way to avoid being x-rayed when driving into the US at any checkpoint in Whatcom county, Washington. And if there was an opportunity to opt out, I am sure that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would at a minimum seriously damage your car making sure you don't have any hidden compartments - just as the TSA attempts to humiliate anybody unwilling to go through a full body x-ray until they let independent organizations freely test their machines for radiation exposure.
