We have a commercial version of this. If you have an old cooler, this is a way to save money and energy. I recommend its use if you have a small stove that runs off fossil fuel.

Haybox Cooker History
ReplyDeleteDuring World War II, hay boxes were used as a way of conserving rationed cooking fuel. Hay boxes are so called because hay or straw were the commonly used insulators. Pots of food would be brought to a boil and then placed in a box filled with hay or straw. Additional hay or straw would be added around and on top of the pot.
Today this is known as Thermal Cooking and recipies can be found on the internet.
This can easily be done in a dutch oven or thermos jug. One way of keeping the hay out of your food was to put the hay in one or several pillow cases. Insulate around the dutch oven in any large box on all sides. The heat will cook the food in a few hours... just like a slow cooker.
