There were a few pivotal events in modern Church history that kept the wolf from the door, so to speak. Many times the Church was at the edge of bankruptcy - can you imagine someone owning the SL Temple for anything other than religious purposes? That because we could not pay our bills?
Jesse Knight (I have featured his story on this blog before - he fully consecrated the wealth he was given to the building up of God's kingdom).
He was given a vision as he sat under a tree napping, wherein he was told that the wealth in the mountains was for the Saints to accomplish their works. He awoke, staked a claim on a quartzitic nearby outcropping containing silver/gold and he mined it, to become one of the richest men in Utah. His mansion is on Center Street in Provo, down from where I used to live as a newly-married couple at BYU. There was a building on the BYU Campus named after him, the Knight-Mangum Building. I had a class and some math tutoring services were offered there that I took advantage of. He saved the BY Academy at a critical juncture.
He also saved the Church at a critical juncture - by cutting a check to cover some sort of debt. He simply gave what he had until it hurt. We should all aspire to that.
Part of his wealth came, when he broke into a cavern (similar to this one), wherein the crystals were silver (instead of these salts). It was the size of a building - and filled with pure preciptated silver crystals:
