Apparently, the world's biggest natural gas repository is letting loose and releasing massive amounts of methane/natural gas. Natural gas is expensive to store, so the nat gas company in SoCal has pumped it down old oil wells into the ground under extremely high pressure. Apparently, this gas has found its way to the surface and is escaping and making homes around the area unsafe and the people sick.
A MASSIVE ecological and social disaster.
No easy solution in sight other than to let it outgas. Here is a video of the escaping gas:
