PASSOVER PREPARATIONS: POUNDING THE ASHES OF THE RED HEIFER
After the burning of the red heifer its ashes were crushed by kohanim with long clubs. The ashes were then sifted until a fine powder was obtained. Only then were the ashes ready to be mixed with the pure 'living waters.'
