Spence Jackson, spokesman for the late Tom Schweich, found dead
JEFFERSON CITY • Veteran Missouri state official Spence Jackson, who was media director for the late state auditor Tom Schweich, was found dead Sunday, sources said. He was 44.
A source told the Post-Dispatch his death was being investigated as a suicide.
Jackson’s death comes about a month after Schweich’s suicide. Amid the subsequent turmoil in the state’s Republican Party, Jackson emerged as a strong critic of Schweich’s political adversaries, to the point of calling for the resignation of a top party official.
Jefferson City police late Sunday refused to confirm Jackson’s death, saying they would release information on Monday morning. A government source said authorities were awaiting identification on a body found in Jackson’s apartment.
Jackson took a sick day on Friday, the source said.

Auditor Schweich had called seeking an interview just before his death
ST. LOUIS • Tom Schweich, Missouri’s Republican state auditor and a leading contender for the governor’s office in next year’s election, died Thursday after apparently shooting himself in his Clayton home.
The sudden death of the second-term auditor shocked and saddened the state’s political establishment and roiled the race for governor barely a month after it began.
“What we know at this point suggests an apparent suicide,” Clayton Police Chief Kevin Murphy told reporters in a news conference Thursday afternoon. He said there was “nothing to support anything other than that at this point,” and said Schweich died from a single gunshot wound.
Murphy said he didn’t know whether Schweich left a note. The chief said an autopsy and investigation are pending.
Earlier in the day, a police source told the Post-Dispatch that Schweich’s wife was in another room of their house when she heard her husband making phone calls, followed by a gunshot. Schweich had been shot in the head, the source said.
A 911 call was made from Schweich’s home at 9:48 a.m., seven minutes after Schweich had left a voicemail requesting an interview with a Post-Dispatch reporter.

Maybe I'm just paranoid from having read Helaman Chapters 1 and 2 this morning, but there's no way I believe either of these cases were "self-inflicted." Something dirty is going on.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you... something is dirty... and not JUST in Missouri.
ReplyDeleteI've seen too many "self-inflicted" family killings and suicides to make this a normal thing. Seems like apparent suicides are the way to get ride of the competition/criticism.
