This is very interesting. Today, I was chatting with a co-worker and we were familiarizing each other with where we are from. In doing so, I came across this photo of Old Chief:
In this photo, there is no easy way to scale it, but this used to be wide enough to "play a football scrimmage on top of" according to some of my older friends, referencing their hikes to the summit as kids. Apparently now it is so narrow on top that in some places, you can barely navigate it's knife edge.
The fracturing of it is now so bad that (as you can see), what is left will likely collapse. In recent years, there have been a series of spectacular rock falls off the north side cliff face.
E.J. Wood may have been parroting the native prophecies about the mountain - but the word on the street is that when there is a great EQ and the mountain crumbles, it is time for the native groups to gather to the area (from off the plains). This is common knowledge with them. You have to be a friend of them to get this info out of them - but it is their tradition.
When someone was painting a duplicate mural in the Cardston Temple (there are two instruction rooms whose murals feature this mountain) back in the early 1920's, a complaint was made to President Wood that the murals should depict a more spectacular mountain instead of the local stand-by, Old Chief that could be seen out the windows of certain endowment rooms. President Wood told the painter to resume and that the mountain would not always be there, so the paintings would serve a good reminder of how things used to be.
So, as with broken institutions from DC and on, I look forward to the crumbling of the old and a new normal of earthly government that includes the Church of the Firstborn with no corrupt (raw evil or faithless or gift-less) middle managers, but a Patriarchal Order comprising a righteous Husband/Wife with Christ at the head (above a very flat org structure, if any).
