EDWARD J. WOOD COMMENTS ABOUT SOLS GUARDISTO

The vision of Sols Guardisto while attending the Cardston, AB temple has driven quite a bit of traffic to this site.  Here is a copy of a letter that Edward Wood (Cardston Temple President) wrote about her:

Edward Wood, who was president of the Cardston Temple for many years, was a witness to the
manifestations of a woman who saw much of the future and mission of the Latter-day Saints.
Although she was not a member of the Church, it has been rumored that she did join the Church
sometime later. This manifestation occurred in March 1922. President Wood answered many
responses to questions about this manifestation, two of which follow:
N. B. Lundwall, Esq.,
Salt Lake City, Utah
Dear Brother:
Cardston, Alberta
July 29, 1924
I am pleased to hear from you in your letter of July 21st, and note the contents and also
the enclosure, and in reply, can easily tell you about the letter.
The lady who wrote the letter came twice, as she states, to the Temple, and certainly
seemed quite sincere in all questions she asked, and gave very marked respect and attention to the
explanations of the objects for which the Temple was built, and went from room to room-of
course, the interior was then unfinished-and she was evidently deeply interested in what she heard
and saw, and asked many questions both about the Temple proper and also about the principles
leading up to our views on Temple building, and she asked a great many questions about our
views of the life after death, and was much taken up with our belief on divine authority, and Our
missionary activities throughout the world; and before she got through her second visit, she had a
very fair understanding of the “vitality of Mormonism" from many angles.
She had some friends or a relative of some members of the church in Lethbridge by the
name of Brown, and she lived somewhere east of here. After she had been away for some time,
she wrote this article as you have it to Mr. Brown, one of these friends or relatives in Lethbridge,
and he sent a copy to me, and of course we were surprised and pleased with her "impressions"
and her apparent understanding of many of our views.
That is about the history of this article.
Sincerely your brother,
Edw. J. Wood
P.S. As I remember, her second visit was in March, 1922; the article was sent to me sometime
after that month.

SHEKINAH AND THE MIGHTY RUSHING OF WINDS

Ever since talking to my Jewish co-worker about Shekinah, I have been intrigued by the similarities between it and the mighty rushing of winds experienced in the Kirtland temple during the dedication. Alot of good stuff on this site:

THE LOGAN TEMPLE - MIRACLE IN MODERN TIMES

I REALLY DO LOVE THE LOGAN TEMPLE AND HAD A YOUTH FIRESIDE IN MY HOME WHERE I PLAYED THIS FANTASTIC TAPE FOR ABOUT 50 KIDS CRAMMED INTO THE LIVING ROOM AND DINING ROOM OF OUR HOME.

THIS BLOG PIECE HIGHLIGHTS JUST ONE OF THE STORIES THAT WAS FOUND ON THAT TAPE AND I COUNT IT AS ONE OF THE TOP 10 GEMS THAT I HAVE COME ACROSS. I RECENTLY ADDED MORE INFO TO AN EARLIER BLOG PIECE I DID ON THIS TEMPLE AND THOUGHT I WOULD RE-POST:

THE TEMPLE OF SOLOMON AS A SYMBOL OF THE BODY OF MAN

Whoa!!! This stuff blows my mind. You have to read each page and keep on clicking the links at the bottom of each page taking you to the next level.

This stuff is astounding! The amount of detail on the temple of Solomon and the earlier structure is cool - let alone the details about how it corresponds to the human form. And how it all ties into the endowment of our modern temples. Truly mind blowing stuff!

SO JOSEPHUS WAS SPOT ON YET AGAIN

JERUSALEM (AP) — Newly found coins underneath Jerusalem's Western Wall could change the accepted belief about the construction of one of the world's most sacred sites two millennia ago, Israeli archaeologists said Wednesday.

The man usually credited with building the compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary is Herod, a Jewish ruler who died in 4 B.C. Herod's monumental compound replaced and expanded a much older Jewish temple complex on the same site.

But archaeologists with the Israel Antiquities Authority now say diggers have found coins underneath the massive foundation stones of the compound's Western Wall that were stamped by a Roman proconsul 20 years after Herod's death. That indicates that Herod did not build the wall — part of which is venerated as Judaism's holiest prayer site — and that construction was not close to being complete when he died.

"The find changes the way we see the construction, and shows it lasted for longer than we originally thought," said the dig's co-director, Eli Shukron.

The four bronze coins were stamped around 17 A.D. by the Roman official Valerius Gratus. He preceded Pontius Pilate of the New Testament story as Rome's representative in Jerusalem, according to Ronny Reich of Haifa University, one of the two archaeologists in charge of the dig.

The coins were found inside a ritual bath that predated construction of the renovated Temple Mount complex and which was filled in to support the new walls, Reich said.

They show that construction of the Western Wall had not even begun at the time of Herod's death. Instead, it was likely completed only generations later by one of his descendants.

The coins confirm a contemporary account by Josephus Flavius, a Jewish general who became a Roman historian. Writing after a Jewish revolt against Rome and the destruction of the Temple by legionnaires in 70 A.D., he recounted that work on the Temple Mount had been completed only by King Agrippa II, Herod's great-grandson, two decades before the entire compound was destroyed.

Scholars have long been familiar with Josephus' account, but the find is nonetheless important because it offers the "first clear-cut archaeological evidence that part of the enclosure wall was not built by Herod," said archaeologist Aren Maeir of Bar-Ilan University, who was not involved in the dig.

Josephus also wrote that the end of construction left 18,000 workmen unemployed in Jerusalem. Some historians have linked this to discontent that eventually erupted in the Jewish revolt.

The compound, controlled since 1967 by Israel, now houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the golden-capped Muslim shrine known as the Dome of the Rock. The fact that the compound is holy both to Jews and Muslims makes it one of the world's most sensitive religious sites.

The dig in which the coins were discovered cleared a Roman-era drainage tunnel that begins at the biblical Pool of Siloam, one of the city's original water sources, and terminates with a climb up a ladder out onto a 2,000-year-old street inside Jerusalem's Old City. The tunnel runs by the foundation stones of the compound's western wall, where the coins were found.

The drainage tunnel was excavated as part of the dig at the City of David, which is perhaps Israel's richest archaeological excavation and its most contentious.

The dig is being carried out inside the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan, and is funded by a group associated with the Israeli settlement movement that opposes any division of the city as part of a future peace deal.

The excavation of the tunnel has also yielded a Roman sword, oil lamps, pots and coins that scholars believe are likely debris from an attempt by Jewish rebels to hide in the underground passage as they fled from the Roman soldiers.

SOME HISTORY ON THE TEMPLE LOT IN INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI

I thought this was interesting info about our recent past church history in Missouri. When my wife and I visited the area with our young family 10 years ago, we walked the grounds of the Far West Temple site in opposite directions and returned to each other and remarked to each other that we were indeed "inside the temple" - even though we were standing on grass in the direct sun. There is a spiritual building in existence there - even though we could not see it with our natural eyes. How I would love to have my spiritual eyes opened to have a glimpse - just for a moment. That would be a fulfillment of a dream!

We (or at least I) did not have the same feeling on the temple grounds in Independence, even though the Spirit was present there in the LDS visitor's center (and not so much at all in the RLDS "concha shell" temple that we toured.

Here is the link: CLICK LINK

I hope you enjoy.

A TEMPLE LOVING PEOPLE - A PROTECTION AGAINST THE STORM

THIS WAS TOO GOOD NOT TO POST FROM A READER'S BLOG:

President Vaughn J. Featherstone promised if members of the Church would spend half a day in the Temple each month the following blessings would result:

1. A man would become mighty, and a woman powerful.
2. It would serve as great "insurance protection" for your marriage.
3. The blessings of the eternal God will be called down upon you, and great spiritual growth will be yours.
4. Unseen angels will watch over your loved ones when Satanic forces tempt them.
5. Your families will draw close to the Lord and there will be no empty chairs in the Celestial Kingdom.
6. Your children will go on missions.
7. Your children will get married in the temple.
8. The veil will be thin, you will have spiritual growth, and many spiritual experiences will distill upon you.
9. You will be prepared for exaltation-with a celestial body, a celestial mind and a celestial personality.
10. You will become receptive to divine guidance and receive spiritual perception to help you grapple with your problems and cares.
11. You will see clearly how to make critical decisions that weigh heavily on your mind.

Temple statement for Utah South Area - Given in the Manti Temple April 1987 by Vaughn J. Featherstone

"The season of the world before us will be like no other in the history of mankind. Satan has unleashed every evil, every scheme, every blatant, vile perversion ever known to man in any generation. Just as this is the dispensation of the fullness of times, so it is also the dispensation of the fullness of evil. We and our wives and husbands, our children, and our members must find safety. There is no safety in the world, wealth cannot provide it, enforcement agencies cannot assure it, membership in this Church alone cannot bring it.

As the evil night darkens upon this generation, we must come to the temple for light and safety. In our temples we find quiet, sacred havens where the storm cannot penetrate to us. There are hosts of unseen sentinels watching over us and guarding our Temples. Angels attend every door. As it was in the days of Elisha so it will be for us: 'Those that be with us are more than they that be against us.' Before the Savior comes the world will darken. There will come a period of time where even the elect will lose hope if they do not come to the temples. The world will be so filled with evil that the righteous will only feel secure within these walls. The Saints will come here not only to do vicarious work, but to find a haven of peace. They will long to bring their children here for safety sake.

I believe we may well have living on the earth now or very soon, the boy or babe who will be the prophet of the Church when the Savior comes. Those who will sit in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles are here. There are many in our homes and communities who will have apostolic callings. We must keep them clean, sweet, and pure in an oh-so-wicked world. There will be greater hosts of unseen beings in the temple. Prophets of old as well as those in this dispensation will visit the temples. Those who attend will feel their strength and their companionship. We will not be alone in our temples.

Our garments worn as instructed will clothe us in a manner as protective as temple walls. The covenants and ordinances will fill us with faith as living fire. In a day of desolating sickness, scorched earth, barren waste, sickening plagues, disease, destruction and death, we as a people will rest in the shade of trees, we will drink from the cooling fountains. We will abide in places of refuge from the storm, we will mount up as on eagles wings, we will be lifted out of an insane and evil world. We will be as fair as the sun and as clear as the moon.

The Savior will come and will honor His people. Those who are spared and prepared will be a temple loving people. They will know him. They will cry out, 'blessed be the name of He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Thou art my God and I will bless thee, Thou art my God and I will exalt thee.'

Our children will bow down at his feet and worship Him as the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings. They will bathe His feet with their tears and He will weep and bless them for having suffered through the greatest trials ever known to man. His bowels will be filled with compassion and His heart will swell as wide as eternity and He will love them. He will bring peace that will last a thousand years and they will receive their reward to dwell with Him.

Let us prepare them with the faith to surmount every trial and every condition. We will do it in these holy, sacred temples. Come, come, come up to the temples of the Lord and abide in His presence."

SEEKING A SIGN FOR MY WIFE - HITTING A HOME RUN WITH ABRAHAM

Marriage is designed as the ultimate check and balance as one sees the other maybe straying a little too far out of the accepted bubble the pair has agreed to work/live within (if things are not in harmony, the imbalance is often manifested as shown above with the pissed-off woman attempting to fillet her pleading partner over the deemed stupidity....).

So, after (she) initially proposing that we head over to MT, my wife is now seeing the enormity of the prospect and is understandably beginning to balk at the road ahead of her. I understand that from her. It is human nature. When I told her to buckle up in our 33rd year, she didn't even connect and then wham, we lost our 9 month old. When the dream I had the night he died predicted we would receive a sign that things were fine and then he showed up with my Mom to my Dad to deliver a message, just as predicted, my wife asked for a sign, not believing that my Dad could be the recipient of such a revelation. I had to pray for several weeks and then wham, another overwhelming sign that she could not ignore from the other side while my Dad was in the West Jordan temple. The Lord always comes through - every time, if the desires are righteous. Part of her disbelief over some of this stuff is that, she, being the mother should have had those experiences for herself - and not someone else she deems less able or relevant to her experience. After all, she birthed the baby, she gets the mother of all revelations. And, I generally think that should be the case. Maybe, that very lack of believing is the source of the others being the recipient of such largesse and not herself. Maybe it just simply comes down to genetics/lineage/eternal order of things; I really can't say. Some people (groups) just simply have these kinds of things in spades.

So Thursday night, at my DSW's request that I make absolutely sure of my lunatic's self, decided to make it to the temple (alone so I would not be distracted) and seek out a direct answer from the Lord. I was not going for the open day vision, first because I was not going fasting for three days or anything like that (I had a bag of honey BBQ wings in the freezer that would not allow me to do so) and secondly have never had one of those ever (even though that would be cool and is on my bucket list), but I was in a state of prayer and contemplation, nonetheless. I would prefer to not have to make a move, be away from my family for some time, etc - I am a family man through and through. This will arguably be nearly as hard on me as it might be on my wife, although I have work to distract me every day....

So I went to the Seattle temple alone last night. As is customary when I have a big decision, I got my name (which I jotted down and directly translates, to "Gentle_patriarch God_is_with_us Proper" and who was born on the exact middle date of of the week of Passover of 1934) and headed to the chapel early to wait for the next session and specifically chose a place to sit away from the others, "feeling my way" until a particular bench "felt" right. I sat down and grabbed the D&C in the pocket said a little prayer and flipped it open to the Facsimile No.1 of the Book of Abraham. I read over the meanings of all of those elements and found nothing in there that I could use - and then I glanced to the other page and immediately read Abraham 1:1;

In the land of the Chaldeans, at the residence of my fathers, I, Abraham, saw that it was needful for me to obtain another place of residence;

I just about burst out laughing - you can't make any of this stuff up. We are definitely in the land of my fathers where I was raised - and with all this gay marriage crud, and ridiculous political stupidity that I have to deal with, Babylon/Chaldea is pretty much in the bag.... The message here is - its time to get the heck out regardless of Elenin or anything else. Seeing that New York just approved gay "marriage" a day ago, Boston,MASS (stupidity) and that mess, California has activist judges shoving it down peoples' throats, Oregon, etc, the areas all previously described/slated for destruction are on the docket, having begged for their demise and now I am stuck in the middle of this (CLICK LINK). I prefer not to be a hapless victim of it all - NO THANKS!!!! So would I be surprised by an Elenin-style event? Not in the least. Has it moved from an isolated thing in an exceedingly wicked city such as San Fran to consume the left coast? Absolutely. From a biblical perspective, are we ripened in the areas defined in D&C and my personal revelations (west coast), I say so. Whats the answer? Get out to a place where most people still farm and have a healthy sense of the common - which is; put a pair of bulls or cows in a pen and feed them til they die, and you will have two dead carcasses and ZERO progeny when it is all over. Game over, folks. The plan follows satan's deal to the letter - carefully dragging gullible idiots carefully down to hell til they are bound and there is no escape. The trap has been set, the bait oddly enticing to many who are blinded (even Steve Young has listened Solomonically to his "strange woman" and is on board - too much time as a 49er, I guess....), and the deserved fate determined for those who insist on dabbling in and supporting Babylon. NO THANKS!!

Soooo...., I then noticed that someone had put the white book mark ribbon on that page. I then cleared my mind and flipped through to the next page that fell open which was D&C 88 (no book mark on this one...) and without even looking around, my eyes fixated on verse 81 - the very verse I have been thinking about greatly since first putting this together for myself. Do I let anyone else know of my lunatic feelings since there will be collateral implications for all others who live here? - or do we just quietly move and just tell folks that we know and love that we are just "living the dream" (and leaving the nightmare this place has become)?? Well, I got my answer - and I think in spades. We truly, once we have been warned, must tell our neighbors and warn them of what is coming. I then read further on (and I had forgotten this from previous readings of Section 88)(CLICK LINK), where it goes into all of the destruction that will occur during the opening of the seventh seal - and then the destruction when the Lord actually comes after the half hour of silence. Man, are we ever in for some interesting times - and who knew it to be so close at hand?? I guess human nature just drives it further out there into the future of the mind because the reality of the near possibility is just too much for the human mind to process.

Such it is with my sign-seeking wife. There is not an ounce of wicked/adulterous/fornicatious (CLICK LINK for a great read) badness in her - but she has a hard time with this stuff - probably due to her mis-trust of men in general due to some bad events she went through as a little girl. She has seen me go through so many of these kinds of events where the needle was threaded properly - but then having witnessed all of my human-ness in all of its diminishing glory, it is hard for her (still) to believe it. So, her self-appointed task is reading about Sarah and how she put up with Lehi's seemingly ridiculous antics.... that ultimately saved their bacon.

As I was leaving the Celestial room, I decided to see if there were any more "messages" for me and went over to one of the tables where the D&C were. I went to pick up the first one - it was the spanish version. I then walked across the room to where two others were lying on a table - first one spanish - next one spanish and then glancing over to the other book (a Bible) - it was in english..... C'mon, this is the Seattle temple - not the Mexico City, Mexico temple!! I guess I had my message.

So, my conclusion is that I have all the answer I need for myself - that kind of cemented it for me. All that fasting that my wife did to help me have the right answer (for her) did not pay off (for her). I guess we will know in a few short months. For those of us on the west coast, there mostly will be NO SECOND CHANCE..... I feel for people I have told out here. Hopefully, there will be a calling out by local leadership not mired in a deep sleep (institutional hypoxia); or someone at the top from SLC (I really feel they know and will talk about something I know further down in this topic). I don't have those keys to make a call for the masses - and have no institutional credibility even if I did. In fact, I have been laughed at and scorned for having exercised the keys for my family (whom I do have sole ultimate responsibility for) in the past - and I forgive those people who should know better, but resent having gone through the experience precisely because I expect better from the caliber of people I am surrounded with.

So, revisiting the topic of a callout from the top. I have a pretty solid feeling that the top brass know where/when/what is coming. I was talking to my old Bishop from Kent about second coming stuff (we were pretty much the only people in the Ward who seemed to care about it), and he is tied into a guy named Joel Skousen (son of Cleon) who is a disaster consultant to the rich/powerful. He (Joel) indicated that the Bretheren all have shelters at their places in the mountains. Dug in. Not sure if that is just a general statement, or what, but it is what it is. I have a feeling that most of the people at the top of most governmental organizations also are in the know and have made preparations. It is the poor suckers like me that will get chewed up.... I like to call myself fodder.

Anyway, enough ramblings. Hope anyone that is taking this stuff seriously has the direction and wisdom that is needed to thread the needle. I would be gratified to know that, for all of the late nights tapping away on this blog, that it saved the bacon of just a few folks - especially innocent children - as the adults have enough resources such as access to personal inspiration, means, etc that they have no excuses. Being the catalyst for the saving of a few people would be payment enough for the countless hours I have put in.

God bless you in your efforts - and please pray for me. I am going to finally head over on or around September 10, 2011 just to make sure if things get weird on September 11th, I am not around. That would be the tenth anniversary - and we just stirred the hornets nest by killing the queen bee. We may (not will) be in for a surprise.... I was over in Kali working on our place on the zero anniversary - and it was a great feeling of safety when things went outside of normal in a big way. When things do get weird in our future (such as an Iranian nuke flying out of Libya towards Israel - and the ensuing limited nuclear exchange) or any other host of possibilities, there most probably will be martial law and movement between states will be limited or non-existent. The trap set and sprung two weeks later if you live on the west coast.

It will NOT be fun.

GENTILES ASSISTING THE LAMANITES IN BUILDING THE NEW JERUSALEM

I think there is much misunderstanding and arrogance in our (Ephraim's) role in the building of the NJ. Our role will be in assisting them - sorry folks.... We are largely the 'mongrels' here - not the other way around.

Same applies to Judah rebuilding their temple. People in the Church have a funny view of things and do not know their scripture nor the contemporary views of things as they will be. It will be a hard day for many who have lived in arrogance and blindness for so long.

Orson Pratt, These Lamanites, or American Indians, that are now so far sunk
beneath humanity, are to be lifted up by the power of the
Almighty when the day shall come for Israel to be restored, for
God will not forget them. They are descendants of the tribe of
Joseph, and consequently they are numbered with the people of
the covenant. God will remember the covenant which he made
with our ancient fathers. These Lamanites, these American
Indians, will come to the knowledge of the covenant, and they
will arise and will build upon the face of this land a magnificent
city called Jerusalem, after the pattern and in the same manner
that the Jews will build old Jerusalem. That is what the
Lamanites will do, and we will go and help them too, for it is
predicted in the Book of Mormon that when this work should
come forth, when the time fully arrives for the redemption of this
small remnant of the house of Joseph, "As many of the Gentiles
as will believe, they shall assist my people, who are a remnant of
the house of Israel, that they may build up on the face of this
land a city that shall be called the New Jerusalem, and then,
behold, the powers of heaven shall come down and be in the
midst of this people, and I also will be in your midst." ***

Wilford Woodruff, The Lamanites will blossom as the rose on the mountains. I am
willing to say here that, though I believe this, when I see the
power of the nation destroying them from the face of the earth,
the fulfillment of that prophecy is perhaps harder for me to
believe than any revelation of God that I ever read. It looks as
though there would not be enough left to receive the Gospel; but
notwithstanding this dark picture, every word that God has ever
said of them will have its fulfillment, and they, by and by, will
receive the Gospel. It will be a day of God's power among them,
and a nation will be born in a day. Their chiefs will be filled with
the power of God and receive the Gospel, and they will go forth
and build the new Jerusalem, and we shall help them. They are
branches of the house of Israel, and when the fullness of the
Gentiles has come in and the work ceases among them, then it
will go in power to the seed of Abraham. ***

HOW WAS THE STONE OF SOLOMON'S TEMPLE CUT WITHOUT HANDS??

Okay - I have to admit that I got blind-sided tonight by my Jewish friend that I work with. I have always marveled at the concept of the corner stone of the temple of Solomon being built of a stone cut without tools/hands and have always been satisfied with some sort of metaphorical reference to Messiach. So my Jewish friend (Elkanah) and I were talking about random subjects and he mentioned that Solomon's Temple was built aided by a "worm". I thought he was just talking gibberish and he challenged me to look this up:

Solomon's Shamir

and this: Legend of Shamir

and this: http://www.varchive.org/ce/shamir/shamir.html

I couldn't believe it. I am not sure how to interpret this - it is about as off the charts unusual as our concept of the Liahona and the Urim and Thummim.

Truly God has been party to some very unusual things that - I feel - belong perfectly at home in this blog for the sensational......

Wood you believe it??? And I thought I had heard it all......

THE LOGAN TEMPLE

This temple is near and dear in our family. My parents were sealed there as well as several siblings. One of my Grandparents was the first (white) male born in the valley - just after crossing the pass, the need to push came and the baby was born.

I ran across a tape in college that was recorded by a Logan Temple Historian that showed the hand of the Lord in its construction.

My ancestors were inhabitants in the valley when the following was witnessed and noted the great illumination in their journals. What a wild experience - to witness such a divine outpouring:

Manifestation of Divine Approval.

One evening in February, 1896, the Hale family was completing the record of sealing for the whole record in the Logan Temple when “a strange phenomenon was reported: the sacred structure, it is said, became suddenly illuminated–flooded from dome to foundation with a blaze of light. Apostle Marriner W. Merrill, who was then President of the Temple, observed the phenomenon as he was traveling on the highway that night from Logan to Richmond. It was likewise observed by many residents of Logan. . . . The following night the Temple was again flooded with illumination, the same as on the previous night.
“President Merrill finally concluded and announced to the general assembly in the Temple that this beautiful and glorious manifestation was a spiritual phenomenon. ‘The matter was subsequently called to the attention of President Wilford Woodruff,’ the account in the Deseret News continued, ‘who declared it to be an assembly of the great Hale family from the spirit world, who had gathered within those sacred walls in exultation over their liberation through the beneficient ministrations in their behalf.’”
Many Family Histories. In behalf of a family so diligent, it is not surprising that other men of the world should search out other lines of their ancestry. The wife of Bishop Jonathan H. Hale, Olive Boynton, was a sister of John F. Boynton, who was one of the first Quorum of Twelve Apostles. He left the Church but in his later years spent virtually his whole time compiling a monumental genealogy of the Boynton family, tracing it back to about 1000 A.D. Others gave similar service. In the Church Record Archives are charts recording the names of 200 direct ancestors of Alma H. Hale. For virtually every line there are one or more printed family genealogies with excellent records of descendants, including the families of Palmer, Johnson, Wicom, Hazeltine, Harriman, Elithorp, Plummer, Wood, Dole, Stickney, Hardy, Kimball, Scott, Whotlock, Day, Pengry, Nichols, George, Pratt, and Hutchinson.
In this remarkable way has the prayer of President Woodruff been fulfilled.

HERE IS A DIRECT TRANSCRIPT TAKEN FROM THE TAPE OF THE LOGAN TEMPLE RECORDER:

Hale family and the Logan Temple

Nolan P Olsen wrote a book called, “Logan Temple, First 100 years.” Nolan is a native of Cache Valley, his family having lived there for 123 years. He served in the Logan temple as an officiator, recorder, member of the temple presidency, and as acting president of the temple during the remodel period. He loved to travel and tell the stories of the Logan Temple. The following is one of his favorite stories, since it involves his own family history. (It is also our family)

In Nauvoo, the Prophet Joseph and the Lord selected twelve apostles for the latter days, and among them was John F Boynton. Only 22 years of age, a brilliant young dentist, maybe the youngest of our apostles. John was there when the prophet talked temple work and when they baptized in the Mississippi River and whatever else went on. The Prophet called the Twelve in one day and talked polygamy to them, told them, “Since you are the Lord’s chosen, He expects you brethren to practice polygamy.” He told them to go out and get them another spouse.

Brother Boynton went home, talked it over with his wife, and they decided they didn’t want another wife. So, while the other brethren went romancing, John went home. Before long, the other brethren are back with their new wives. Brother Boynton was called in, he had nothing to report. The prophet told him to go do it. He was finally called in four or five times. Never did it. He was finally disfellowshipped and then excommunicated for disobeying the prophet. He had one or two other little troubles to go with his disobedience. He went back to his home in Massachusetts.

His sister, Olive Boynton, had married Jonathon Harriman Hale, bishop of the ninth ward in Nauvoo. (Jonathon and Olive were our great grandparents. This is one of my family stories.)

The Hales headed west. Grandpa and Grandma died at winter quarters with the cholera. Three brothers and a sister came west and settled at Grantsville out by Tooele.

In the late 1870’s Uncle John got word that the Mormons were building a temple in Logan, and that sparked his interest. He never did lose his testimony of the gospel, he was never rebaptized, but he did have three wives, one at a time.

When he heard about our temple he compiled a real unusual record of the Hale and Boynton families. He wrote 1100 letters, traveled 6000 miles in a time when there isn’t a printed book anywhere to help him. He sent the records to his nephews at Grantsville, and they didn’t know what to do with them, just stack them up in a cupboard. It was 350 miles to St George, that temple is open. The Salt Lake temple did not open until ‘93.

When Logan opened in ’84 our Hale family moved to Cache Valley. Here they hired Brother Samuel Roskelley to keep the records. From then until about 1903 he kept a steady stream of names going through the temple.

One Sunday that fall he brought the records back to our Grandpa, Alma Hale. He said, “Brother Hale, my eyesight is poor, my health is bad. I can’t finish the records.” Grandpa didn’t know what to do. Nobody had been trained in genealogy in those days. When you don’t know what to do, there’s always something you can do. You can fast and pray.

Grandpa said he fasted and prayed for a week and some of the family joined him. The next Sunday, Brother Roskelley came back and said, “Give me the records. I made a promise to a heavenly being that I have to keep.”

He said, “Friday, as I came from the temple and neared the Hyde Park Lane, a man on a white horse suddenly appeared at the side of my buggy, and asked about the Hale and Boynton records. He assured me they were properly compiled, and the work in the temple was being done correctly, that every spirit was anxious that the work be completed for him or for her.”

Brother Roskelley explained his health problems. The rider promised him in the name of the Lord that his eyesight would be good, his health would improve and he could do it. Brother Roskelley agreed and the visitor disappeared. Brother Roskelley went home, took his glasses off to go to bed that night and never put them on again in his life. He had good eyesight.

He woke up the next morning feeling like a young man. His aches and pains were gone and he ran and did what he wanted. And as he described his visitor on the horse, Grandpa Alma Hale said, “Why, that was my father; that was Jonathon Harriman Hale, bishop of the ninth ward in Nauvoo.”

It took Brother Roskelley about two years to finish the record. One week in the fall of that year, we had a Hale reunion in the temple. We completed the last baptism, endowment, and then the last sealing on a Friday afternoon. That night as Brother Merrill returned home to Richmond, as he’d get to Smithfield and before the homes blocked his view of the temple, he would turn and tell the temple goodbye. This night as he did, he said his heart jumped almost out of him. The temple was on fire, and he didn’t know what to do. By the time he could drive his horse and buggy back the temple could burn down and he wouldn’t be much use to it. He decided to sit. He turned his buggy around and watched. In two or three minutes he said to himself, “That is not a fire.” There were no red flames burning upwards, but the whole building was lighted inside and out with a beautiful rosy glow that was steady and not a burning flame. He knew something unusual was taking place, but he went on home and came back on Monday morning.

As soon as he knew the story he talked with President Joseph F Smith, and the President asked, “What family in the Church has done something unusual in the temple?” The Hale family was the only one anywhere to complete such a record of 4,000 names. The President told him you have been permitted to have a visit from those 4,000 members of the Hale and Boynton families, who came from Heaven to sing and rejoice and be happy at their deliverance in the Logan Temple.

The people of Logan gathered at the temple to see the building lighted. We didn’t have electricity in the building until 10 years later; it was 1915 before we had electricity. Nothing but a coal oil lamp that would not light the building.

As the people marveled they heard a heavenly choir sing in the big room upstairs, and for about two hours the heavenly choir sang beautiful music. It happened again on the Saturday night, two nights in a row. The building was lighted and the heavenly choir sang.

THERE IS ALOT OF OTHER GREAT INFO I WILL PUBLISH LATER ABOUT THIS TEMPLE AND MAYBE GET A RECORDING OF THE TAPE TO GO WITH THIS.

AS A FUNNY SIDE NOTE, MY SISTER DATED A GUY WITH THE LAST NAME OF BOYNTON. THE INTERESTING THING ABOUT THE GUY WAS HIS FLAMING RED HAIR AND HIS NOTORIOUSLY BAD TEETH. THEY WERE SO BAD, MY MOM GAVE HIM THE NICK-NAME OF "SNAGGLE-TOOTHED BUCK". NOT VERY NICE OF MY MOM - BUT SHE WAS A BIT OF A EUGENICIST AND DIDN'T WANT ANY GRAND KIDS WITH ANOMALOUS GENES; EVEN THOUGH SHE BROUGHT A FEW BAD ONES INTO THE FOLD, HERSELF. IN LOOKING BACK, SHE MAY HAVE JUST WANTED TO AVOID MAKING THINGS WORSE THAN WHAT SHE HAD ALREADY DONE..... THAT STORY STILL BRINGS A SMILE TO MY FACE THINKING ABOUT IT.
