BOOK OF MORMON AND THE DNA EVIDENCE LIES

I dedicate this read to my former Scoutmaster who decided to leave the church over DNA evidence - oh, and then decided to leave his wife for another woman. OR did I get that wrong?? Sorry, it was commit adultery and then use the whole hokey DNA thing as a convenient excuse to make a clean escape from the truth.....without the searing conscience eating away at you quite so hard - at least until the final smackdown at the judgment bar.

I would have some pity or compassion on the guy - but it was a complete and total coup by the lefties and something-for-nothing-throw-your-hands-in-the-air-say-Jesus-I'm-saved-while-ravishing-the-neighbors-wifie BACs- but-that's-okay-cuz-I-found-Jesus.... types that I grew up with. My former Scoutmaster was so well known (and liked by all in the community) that the damage to the Church due to his "defection" was quite far reaching (on a local scale). It could forseeably take decades for the effects to completely wear off. Not unlike William W. Phelps apostasy that ended up with far-reaching consequences for the Prophet Joseph and his incarceration in the oxymoronically-named "Liberty" Jail.....
Here is a great teaser from the attached expose which is going in the blog (and I watched the Nova special on this and came to the same conclusion about the age of our ice sheets/earth and the whole DNA thing, in general - before I read this). Why is it, the more I find out about these supposed global warming 'scientists' and their associated ilk, that I feel I need to take a shower. For the most part - they are complete idiots and goons - oh, and then there is Al Gore.... Who can blame Tipper?? But I digress; read the whole thing and you will know why I feel the way I feel:

For several years scientists have been drilling ice core samples in the arctic regions of the world. The ice accumulating in areas such as Greenland and Antarctica are often several thousand feet deep. There are an alternating series of light and dark rings found every few inches on these ice core samples pulled up from the ice. Scientists believe these rings are are laid down annually. They believe the light rings are indications of winter when the ice accumulates, and the dark rings are indications of summer when the top layer of the ice slightly melts. They have counted hundreds of thousands of these rings in the ice, which they believe proves the earth is at least hundreds of thousands of years old.
The scientists have used these rings to predict global climate changes from the past stretching back what they believe is hundreds of thousands of years. By measuring the thickness of the ice layers, they believe they are able to predict periods of warm and cold periods throughout the earth's history. DNA researchers have used this data in conjunction with their own DNA data to predict migration patterns of people, based upon when they believe "ice ages" occurred.
Many scientists and Christians have gone so far as to say this evidence irrefutably proves the earth is at least hundreds of thousands to millions of years old. Unfortunately for these scientists and Christians, there is a remarkable story, that is now sixty years in the making which completely disproves the entire ice core theory.
During the second world war, an entire squadron of p-38 aircraft en-route from the United States to Europe had to make an emergency landing while over Greenland. The flight crews were rescued, and the planes have been sitting intact on the ice ever since.
Fifty years later, in 1992, a group of individuals thought they could retrieve the aircraft, and restore them. They launched an expedition to Greenland to retrieve the aircraft. When they finally located the planes, they were surprised to find that they were under 263 feet of ice. They then set up camp and bored a hole down through the ice and brought one of the planes up piece by piece. While they bored the hole they found hundreds of these ice rings above the planes. If these layers were annual rings as suggested by the scientists, then there should not have been more than fifty layers of ice above the planes. But there were hundreds of layers. They could not possibly be considered annual layers. In the twelve years since this recovery, an additional sixty feet of ice, and dozens more ice rings have accumulated over the level of their camp in 1992. The layers do little more than count the number of storms that hit the area. These are not tree rings we're counting.
Yet, thousands of scientists have devoted their entire lives toward studying these layers of ice. Uncounted numbers of theories concerning the earth's history have been formulated in part from using this mis-interpreted data. For years, atheists have been beating creation scientists over the head with this ice core theory. Yet now the tables are turned, the atheists now deliberately ignore this evidence promoted by the creation scientists.
The fact that so many scientists could so badly bungle evidence as simple as counting ice rings, does little to bolster one's confidence in other scientists ability to interpret far more complex data such as DNA samples. The more complex the data, the greater the potential for error. The greater the potential for error, the more elaborate a web one must weave.

Does DNA evidence Disprove the Book of Mormon? DNA Experts, and Christians Attack the Bible as Well as the Book of Mormon.

Introduction:
One of most basic tenets of the LDS faith maintains that the Book of Mormon is a literal history of the ancestors of the present day American Indian peoples. The Book of Mormon teaches that the ancestors of the present day American Indians were led out of Jerusalem by the wisdom and power of God to live here in this land - the Americas. The Book of Mormon plainly teaches that this land is given unto the present day American Indian peoples for their inheritance. The Book of Mormon teaches that the present day American Indians are the literal descendents of Abraham, that they are a remnant of the House of Israel, and they are God's Covenant people, whom God will redeem in the last days, and they shall be a righteous people.
Joseph Smith said that:
"The Book of Mormon is a record of the forefathers of our western tribes of Indians; having been found through the ministration of an holy angel, and translated into our own language by the gift and power of God, after having been hid up in the earth for the last fourteen hundred years, containing the word of God which was delivered unto them (the ancestors of the American Indians). By it we learn that our western tribes of Indians are descendants from that Joseph who was sold into Egypt, and the land of America is a promised land unto them, and unto it all the tribes of Israel will come, with as many of the Gentiles as shall comply with the requisitions of the new covenant." (History of the Church, volume 1, page 315)
There can be no question as to what Joseph Smith and all the early Church leaders plainly taught concerning who the Native American peoples really are. The American Indians will be the principal builders of the City of New Jerusalem, which will be built here on this continent. There can be no question as to what the Book of Mormon plainly teaches and prophesies concerning the American Indian people, who were anciently called Lamanites. Joseph Smith also emphasized that any man in the church who teaches a Doctrine different than what he taught would be cursed. Yet, in spite of all this, over the last several years, we have been witnessing a remarkable change taking place in the LDS Church; where the learned men in the Church, including B.Y.U. professors and the Church leaders themselves have begun to deny the American Indians as the covenant people of God.
Recently, much attention has been given to the latest attacks against the Mormon religion by certain DNA experts, who claim the American Indians are not descended from the House of Israel as the Book of Mormon teaches, but they allege that they originated from Eastern Siberia. Genetic researches have tested the DNA of several tribes in Eastern Siberia and found them to be related to American Indian tribes. Scientists have formulated a theory that tens of thousands of years ago, there must have been a land bridge which enabled people to travel from Asia to America, and when this land bridge somehow disappeared under water, the people in Asia and the Americas were seperated with no further contact. They have attempted to hold this as proof that the Native Americans have originated in Asia.
Many Christians have celebrated this so-called "DNA evidence" to refute the Book of Mormon. Some Christian ministries have spent large sums of money spreading and promoting this idea among the Mormons. If these Christians came to the realization that their efforts are also attacking the Bible, would they stop doing this and begin looking at the reasons that refute this argument? Or are these people part of a growing "Christian" movement who believe that the Bible is merely an inspirational "story", and not a factual history of the world?
Likewise, the many learned defenders of the Mormon faith, have attempted to reconcile this new DNA evidence into their faith; by claiming the Book of Mormon history only took place in a small area of Central America, and did not involve the entire continents and people as the Book of Mormon teaches. These scholars now say that Joseph Smith was wrong, when he taught that the present day American Indians are the direct descendants of the Lamanites mentioned in the Book of Mormon. Many Mormon scholars now believe the Lamanites merely blended in over the generations with the Siberian "immigrants" who "already" populated the Americas. These learned scholars say this explanation best fits in with the "evidence" provided to us by the geneticists, and they have adopted it as their belief, in spite of it's many contradictions with the Mormon religion. Many LDS Scholars have gone so far as to say the Book of Mormon is not a historical record, but merely an inspirational story written by Joseph Smith.
This rationalization and many other "stories" currently being promoted within the LDS Church, have caused many of the Mormons who are not knowledgeable in the basic precepts of their faith, to lose what little testimony they have left, and turn against their religion.
For years, these prominent men in the LDS Church have been contradicting the teachings of Joseph Smith, and all of the other early Church leaders, who clearly taught that the American Indians truly are of the House of Israel, as taught in the Book of Mormon. Unfortunately, to our knowledge, there is now absolutely no one in the LDS Church who is defending the original teachings of Joseph Smith, and the Book of Mormon on this matter. Not one single Mormon do we know of, is remaining true to their beliefs.
Not many years ago, the church was filled to overflowing with people who believed the American Indians were Lamanites. They believed that not only was Joseph Smith a true prophet of God, but the principles he taught were the literal truth. As for today, one can travel from one end of Mormondom to another, and scarcely find a truly believing member. The vast majority have now come to believe in the opinions of the genetic researchers, BYU professors and Church leaders who teach a totally different doctrine than what Joseph Smith taught. Where did all the true Mormons go? Why did they change?

The ice then subsided, filling the oceans with more water and submerging this "land bridge." Over the next thirty thousand years, these now isolated Siberian tribes in Alaska eventually populated the Americas. They claim their DNA research proves that these Siberian tribes are the ancestors of all American Indians. And they say their research from annual ice ring layers taken from ice core samples proves the existence of an "ice age" tens of thousands of years ago. These scientists believe that the Siberian and American tribes have been "isolated" from each other since the loss of this land bridge so many tens of thousands of years ago after this "ice age" receded.
But recorded history tells us a far different story than the one laid out by these so-called scientists. History tells us that the tribes in Siberia, and North America have been trading and intermarrying with each other for many centuries. Whaling boats from the tribes in the Northwest from California to Alaska have been known to travel hundreds of miles across the sea on their hunting trips. Native American tribes have colonized hundreds of remote islands throughout the Canadian Arctic. Some of these islands are accessible only by hundreds of miles of journey by boat. Islands which are far more remote and difficult to reach than Siberia, which is only a journey of about fifty five miles from Alaska. Relative to this, a thousand years ago, the Viking colonists in Greenland encountered Native American tribes already living in the region. Yet Greenland is much more remote and harsh than Siberia.
During the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, when the Russian Empire expanded it's boundaries eastward into Siberia, the Russian army engaged in armed conflicts with the native tribes in Siberia. It is a story that is strikingly similar to the plight of the American Indian tribes in the United States, during the same time period.
The major case in point is the Chukchi tribe in Eastern Siberia. Much of their traditional coastal lands in Eastern Siberia lie within a short few hundred miles of the American Indian tribes in Alaska. This is the tribe that is most often quoted by geneticists as being the ancestors of the American Indians, that they believe were cut-off and "isolated" by the receding of the land bridge.
At one point during the Chukchi war against the Russian army during the eighteenth century, the entire tribe consisting of some ten-thousand members fled across the Bering straits by boat to spend the winter in Alaska with their Eskimo cousins. They regrouped, and many returned again back to Siberia the following spring to continue their war against the Russians.
One website at http://www.eki.ee/books/redbook/chukchis.shtml gives a short history of the chukchi people in Siberia. This website describes how the the Eskimos, Itelmens, Evens, Kereks, and other tribes were long accustomed to traveling to Chukchi lands in Siberia to speak in the Chukchi language and carry on extensive trading with them. It describes how many of the people in these Alaskan tribes even became Chukchis. It describes how there has always been a lively trade between all the peoples. This website also says that if the Russian government did not enter into a peace treaty with the Chukchis when they did, all the wayward Chukchis would have ended up in Alaska.
The assumptions and theories of these scientists could not contradict the historical record more! All the arctic peoples have been freely traveling, trading and intermarrying with each tribe in both Siberia and North America for more centuries than anyone can possibly know. Their numerous colonies stretch across an enormous arctic region from Siberia to Greenland. There should little doubt in any reasonable person's mind that all of these tribes from Siberia to Greenland, and even across most of the Western Hemisphere are very similar genetically, and are basically all the same people.
It is a very interesting but shocking display of ignorance on the the part of these scientists to suddenly come along and study the DNA of these people in Eastern Siberia, and "discover" that their DNA is similar to the American Indians living across the Bering Straits. It is interesting how they treat this as "evidence" which somehow "disproves" the Book of Mormon.
It is interesting to note how these "scientists" draw an imaginary line down the Bering Straits between Siberia and Alaska, and then ignorantly conclude that that this narrow body of water has kept the sea faring tribes on both sides of the straits in "isolation" from each other since the loss of this supposed "land bridge." This concept of "isolation" is a very important point for these scientists. In order for them to say that American Indians came from Siberia, they must maintain that the Siberian and American tribes have been living in isolation from each other for a very long time. Without this very important point, their theory simply does not hold water.
Everyone reading this article should seriously ask themselves how absurd it is to label the tribes on the west side of the straits as "Siberian" or "Asian," and then treat them as if there is some sort of distinction from the American Indian tribes living on the east side of the straits who are for the most part, the exact same people.
Several times during the twentieth century, dog sleds have even successfully traveled across the Bering Straits when it is frozen in the winter. On a clear day, Siberia can be seen from Alaska.
It is simply a fallacy to believe as these scientists do, that the American and Siberian tribes have remained genetically isolated for tens of thousands of years. It is not reasonable to believe that seafaring American Indians could reach as far as Greenland, yet, never colonize into Siberia. There is absolutely no valid evidence a land bridge ever existed between Alaska and Siberia. The people who made up this land bridge theory had to have a reason for how the American Indians came to be on this continent, and they considered the ancestors of American Indians too primitive and inept, to figure out how to build a boat. In a way it is quite insulting to the intelligence of the Native American People. It was totally unacceptable to them to entertain the idea that they arrived by boat, because it might also provide evidence to support the Book of Mormon. They decided there had to be some connection by land which enabled them to arrive on this continent. Hence the land bridge theory was born. The historical record plainly contradicts the strange beliefs of these scientists. We know for an absolute certainty, that nearly all the Native Americans living in coastal and river regions from Alaska to Peru, had the complete ability to travel by water craft. It is long overdue that this land bridge theory be put to rest.
Mormons should not be surprised and shocked to learn that there are tribes of American Indians living in Siberia any more than they should be surprised and shocked to learn there have been tribes of American Indians living in Greenland. This does absolutely nothing to refute the Book of Mormon in any way.
Scientists have found that the deeper into Asia they go, the less related the people become to American Indians. How did these so called "experts" come to the conclusion, that they originated in the mostly uninhabited areas of eastern Siberia, and then migrated across a "land bridge" to Alaska, then built a huge civilization in Central America thousands of miles away? How did they rule out that it was not the other way around? That they originated in Central and South America, where the bulk of population clearly has it’s base, and then migrated north into North America, and eventually into Eastern Siberia, and mingle with the people there? The Arctic regions of the world are harsh, and for the most part, uninhabitable. There have been mysterious catastrophes there in the past which has destroyed all life in the region. How have the geneticists reversed logic, and rule out that migrations did not begin in the major population centers in Central and South America, and eventually reach as far north as the uninhabited areas of eastern Siberia?

There is no historical evidence in existence, that the earth is older than six thousand years. Many Creation scientists have proven that not only are many of the theories of contemporary science wrong, and totally unsupportable; but they have provided sufficient evidence that these theories were concocted for the express purpose of destroying Christianity. Christians have clearly documented the overwhelming bias against religion in the halls of academia. They provide numerous cases of scientists and professors losing their jobs because they expressed a belief in the Bible, and questioned the validity of the atheists’ theories. These geneticists trying to disprove the Book of Mormon are hardly the unbiased, open minded intellectuals they try so hard to portray themselves as. These geneticists simply have an agenda, and they diligently search for any "evidence" or statistics that can be manipulated to support their agenda.
These geneticists are also making the claim that humans and Chimpanzees are 99.9% the same genetically and should be classified as the same species. They say that humans are nothing more than a sub-species of chimpanzees. How do these Christians honestly reject the geneticists argument on the one hand, and then openly accept and support their posturing against the Book of Mormon on the other hand.

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe." 1 Cor. 1:18-21.

For anyone who literally believes the Bible to be an accurate and inspired history of the world, both of the Christians and of the Mormons; the claims of these geneticists presents a number of challenges to them. The Bible teaches that the Earth was created about six thousand years ago, and Adam and Eve were our first parents. The Bible teaches us that these were the first two people on the Earth, and there were no other people prior to this time. Adam and Eve had many children, and over the next two millennia the entire earth was populated with people. The Bible also teaches that about 4,000 to 4400 years ago, there was a great flood of water that covered the entire surface of the earth, and every one on earth was drowned save Noah and his family, who were preserved in the ark. After the flood, Noah’s children replenished the earth with people. The Bible teaches that every person now living on the earth, without exception is directly descended from Noah.
The Book of Mormon teaches that about 2600 years ago, God led a number of Israelite people out of Jerusalem, prior to it's destruction and captivity of the Jews by the Babylonians. Led by Lehi, these Israelites came to the Americas, and eventually populated the entire Western Hemisphere with their descendants. These people were the direct descendents of Joseph who was sold into Egypt, and who was the brother of Judah, who is the father of the Jews. The Book of Mormon teaches that the present day American Indians are the direct descendants of these Israelites, who are of the tribe of Manasseh and that great blessings are promised to them in the last days by God.
In contrast, these geneticists maintain that the American Indians migrated into the Americas from Siberia thirty thousand years ago. This attack against the Book of Mormon should be of great concern to any Bible believing Christian, because it attacks the validity of the Bible as well. The geneticists say that certain DNA markers pass from father to son with little change. They claim they can trace these DNA markers back for tens of thousands of years, and thousands of generations, far longer than the Bible teaches how old the earth is. The geneticists claim there is no significant relationship or common ancestry between all the races of people on the earth going back these tens of thousands of years, long before the time of Noah. Yet it is the Christian ministries themselves who are some of the prime supporters and promoters of this so called "evidence."
The Bible records in Genesis Chapter 11, 1 Chronicles Chapter 3 and Matthew Chapter 1, most of the generations between Noah and Christ. Probably around 60 to 80 generations. If we assume that the average generation span in the two thousand years since Christ is about 25 to 35 years, then there is only an additional 60 to 80 generations until the present day. That leaves a total of only about 120 to 160 generations between Noah until the present day. People cannot honestly lay claim to a belief in the Bible, without also believing that all the races and wide variations of men, are directly descended from one family about 4000 years ago.
In spite of this DNA research which many "Christian" ministries now believe in, some Christians still hold the Genesis account in the Bible to be the infallible word of God. All the early Mormon Church leaders considered this account in Genesis to be the gospel truth as well. On the other hand, many atheists do not believe in the Bible, and have carefully crafted their own philosophies with the purpose of refuting the Bible, and destroying many peoples belief in God. As everyone is aware, there has been a war going on for quite some time now between those who believe in God, and those who try to destroy that belief. The fields of science have been one such battleground.
If we believe the Bible is true, that everyone now living on the earth is descended from one man 4,000 years ago, and if we take the claims of these DNA experts to their logical conclusion, then DNA research should be able to prove a common DNA heritage to every man in the world. If they make the claim that they can trace heritage back tens of thousands of years, because certain genetic markers remain little changed over that period of time, then every male in the world should have elements of a common father from four thousand years ago. But there is a very diverse variety found in all the races of people today. This makes the beliefs and motives of the Christians who support these geneticists' theories, contradictory and confusing.
It is no doubt true that certain genetic markers do remain little changed and can be traced from parent to offspring. But given the extremely numerous variations of people present in the world today, using such means to accurately trace a person’s heritage over thousands or even hundreds of generations is a claim that is highly questionable,
If every man in the world has a common father from four thousand years ago, and these genetic markers remain little changed over this length of time, then why are there so many variations in the people that allows them to find distinctions in every race in the world? Why are Christians supporting these geneticists claims that there is no relation between American Indians and other races of people for tens of thousands of years, if everyone in the world had a common father in Noah 4000 to 4400 years ago? What is the Christian's explanation for how the people of the earth have come to be so varied over the generations, and so "unrelated" by geneticists standards?
Lehi came to this continent 2600 years ago, only about 1400 to 1800 years removed from Noah, which is not very long at all by geneticists standards. His children who are now the population of American Indians have remained mostly isolated from the rest of the world ever since. This makes American Indians about the most isolated population in the world. Assuming all these uncountable variations of people in the world today came from one man four thousand years ago, and assuming that variations increase from generation to generation as fast as the Bible suggests it does; then would it not be reasonable to assume that the American Indians so isolated would have developed traits unique to the world, over the past 2600 years?
It is most unfortunate that the Christians proudly point to the work of these geneticists, in an effort to disprove the Book of Mormon, knowing full well what these same geneticists beliefs are concerning the Bible. These geneticists do not believe in the Bible. In order for their theories to work, they cannot accept that every person in the world has a common father in Noah, just over four thousand years ago. In order for their theories to work, they must put their faith in the dubious claim that they can accurately trace the genetic markers of people back tens of thousands of years.
These DNA researchers must completely disregard the account in Genesis; because the Bible records Abraham was born 292 years, and only 9 generations after the flood. Abraham was 58 years old when Noah died, and may even have known Noah personally. One of the basic premises of these DNA theories against the Book of Mormon is that Abraham could not have been related to the rest of the world. The reason being is because these geneticists claim that the present day Jews have a common genetic makeup which is traceable from son to father through the Y-chromosome all the way back to their father Abraham who had his own unique DNA from the rest of the races then living in the world. Yet, if the Bible is true, and Abraham was only nine generations after Noah, then Abraham would still be closely related to everyone then living on the earth.
The Book of Mormon records that Lehi is a descendant of Joseph, while the Jews are descendants of Judas who were both great grandsons of Abraham.
If the Bible is true, it would not be possible for the world to "unrelate" itself by geneticists standards in the approximately 300 years or 9 generations between Noah and Abraham, and then according to geneticists standards maintain a common relation or heritage for each of the 120 to 160 generations of the past 4000 years. In order for the DNA experts' theory to work, the Bible must be thrown out the window alongside the Book of Mormon, and the history of the World must be thrown back tens of thousands of years, in order for the world to "unrelate" itself to the point that would fit the geneticist theories. How do the Christians reconcile this, because the very claims the geneticists are making attempts to disprove their own beliefs in the Bible as well?
For all of you Christians who have bought into this DNA argument in your lifelong attacks against the Book of Mormon, you better be aware of just what you are doing, because you are unwittingly attacking the Bible with your arguments, and contradicting your own beliefs. You either believe the Bible, that the earth was flooded 4400 years ago or you don’t. There is a world of evidence that the flood really happened, you can’t prove there wasn’t a flood. That overwhelming evidence for a worldwide flood blows a major hole in the geneticists’ theories. So if you are a Christian who has bought into the fairy tale that there were nomadic tribes of people wandering the earth 30,000 years before Adam and Eve, and say the Bible is not really history, but was just mythology written down, you better start honestly asking yourself why you even bother to call yourself a Christian.
Likewise the Mormons who have bought into this DNA argument, and are attempting to reconcile these DNA posturings into the fabric of their religion, should take a history lesson from B.H. Roberts. Mr. Roberts tried to reconcile the theory of evolution into the fabric of L.D.S. church doctrine, because he considered evolution too overwhelming to ignore. He eventually lost his testimony in the Church, and became an apostate over the issue. Evolution seems like a foolish reason to reject the Church; considering how preposterous the theory of evolution has come to be regarded by honest people. We are told in both the Bible and the Book of Mormon to not put our trust in the arm of flesh, but to trust in God only, so our doctrines may be sound, and we are not cursed. The Book of Mormon is a precious gift from God, which the world rejects with the same enthusiasm as when the world rejected the Messiah when he walked the earth. There is no known provable fact, no unalterable scientific law which conflicts in any way with anything written in the Book of Mormon. But the Book of Mormon conflicts with petty opinions and philosophies of nearly everyone alive, including most Mormons.
Everyone reading this article should honestly ask themselves which religion is more reasonable and logical, and which is more absurd and contrary to the facts. You can choose to believe in the religion that says humans are descended from chimpanzees millions of years ago, and crossed an imaginary land bridge between continents 30,000 years ago if you want, but don't expect honest people to take you seriously for much longer. The wisdom of the wise will truly be confounded, very shortly.
The American Indians truly are a branch of the House of Israel, and the day is soon coming that the American Indians will be convinced of the truth, which has already gone forth among them, as prophesied in the Book of Mormon. The time will soon come when the hearts of the American Indians will turn to their fathers in the Book of Mormon who prayed so hard for their children of these last days. With so many Mormons now turning themselves away, and rejecting the truth of their religion; the American Indians remain the greatest hope for the future of the Mormon Church.

THE SECOND COMING PRECEDED BY EVER-INCREASING DISASTERS

I read about the disasters going on in the earth and can feel the tenor picking up.

I wish now that I had blogged it, but there were several obscure prophecies that I have bumped into from years ago that have caught my attention as the "final signs" that we are on the cusp. One of them was that there would be a massive ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico (I have to think this oil well disaster qualifies potentially as it!). Another sign was that there would be a disaster in Korea that would draw us (more heavily) into that arena militarily which would leave us virtually unprotected at home militarily (it would be a planned trap to destroy this great nation) and then our ability to bring our troops home from all theaters would be limited or destroyed due to the world's oil capacity would be limited (I think this was tied into the whole world economic collapse), and then a nuclear arm being launched by Iran from Northern Africa in the direction of Israel.

The disease, nuclear explosions and finally invasions would start in earnest to sweep the wicked from off the face of the earth right at that point. We are entering the last 6-10 years before this all goes down.

My family spent a great Sunday evening over at a family of some friends and we talked about some of this "blog" stuff. I quote the fringie stuff to see where people are at in their faith and ability to believe (what is the less bizarre stuff we will witness in the coming decades), because that is where I find a majority of the truth may lie - stuff that was thrown out because it was too unbelievable to the wicked masses and learned ones who were too intelligent for the 'nonsense'. Here is a quote from the so-called 'White horse' prophecy that has been largely thrown out - which I think we seem to find ourselves in today - to the letter:

"Our nation ... is rent, from center to circumference, with party strife, political intrigues, and sectional interest; ... our merchants are paralyzed, our tradesmen are disheartened, our ... credit ruined, and our states overwhelmed in debt," --Joseph Smith

This family group was one of the few groups of people that didn't give me a collective "glazed-over" look. They will probably make it through it all just fine so long as the basic telestial law and associated commandments are being kept to qualify them. There was a younger couple (with small kids and another on the way) at the gathering and I felt bad that this all might have scared them to some degree. Having lost a child in the night to SIDS - and coming away from that experience not embittered, but knowing with a solid certainty that God is completely in control - I do not feel concerned for the future if I have followed all the counsel of the Lord to the letter and that I am striving to my best possible to keep the commandments as I know them. It really is a lot like child birth that I watched my brave wife endure. There was trepidation knowing a somewhat physically and psychologically challenging event with a known outcome was coming. None of us would ever try and cut that experience short or somehow avoid it out of fear - but we charge on knowing it is how things are supposed to come out (good or bad), knowing the sweet, sweet joy that awaits on the other side of the event.

As in child birth, so is the coming of the Son of Man going to be. A "portent of stormy weather lies ahead" - but we charge on knowing we can raise our sweet innocent ones 'on the other side of the event', in an environment of peace, love and joy punctuated with personal visits by the Savior. I would gladly give myself to have that experience - not as one without hope due to despair and ungodly living, but because of the love of God that I know exists on the other side of sorrow and tragedy; the love I felt the night God saw fit to take our child home. It is exquisite and I would give (give up) anything to live in that environment in perpetuity.

Having said that, I repost this from an earlier thread. This might better be posted as a treatise on the coming (second) civil war in the U.S which will end in the "death and misery of many souls":

"The time will come when the banks of every nation will fall and only two places will be safe where people can deposit their gold and treasure. This place will be the White Horse and England's vaults. England and France are now bitter enemies but they will be allied together and be united to keep Russia from conquering the world. The two popes, Greek and Catholic, will eventually come together in their decline and be united. The Protestant Religions do not know how much they are indebted to Henry VIII for throwing off the Pope's bill and establishing the Protestant faith. He was the only monarch who could do so at that time and he did it because the nation was at his back to sustain him. One of the peculiar features in England is the established Red-coat; a uniform making so remarkable a target to shoot at, and yet they have conquered wherever they have gone. The reason for this will be known to them some day as red is seen in a different color threading through under all history. The lion and the unicorn of England comes from there being so much blood of Israel in the nation. While the terrible things of which I have mentioned are going on, England will be neutral until it becomes so inhuman that she will interfere to stop the shedding of blood and history will be more properly understood. England and France will unite together to make peace, not to subdue the nations. She will find this nation so broken up and so many claiming government, till there will be no reasonable government. Then it will appear to the other nations, or powers, as though England had taken possession of the country. The Black Horse will flee to the invaders and will join them for they have fear of becoming slaves again; knowing that England did not believe in slavery, they will flee to them that they believe will make them safe. Armed with British bayonets, the doings of the Black Horse will be terrible." Here the Prophet said that he could not bear to look longer upon the scenes as shown to him in vision and he asked the Lord to close the scenes.

Second Great Rebellion (Chicago) Quote

A. Milton Musser papers, LDS Church Archives. It is a letter from
Nephi Packard to A. Milton Musser on July 24, 1896:

"... My brother, Noah Packard, says that he heard the Prophet Joseph
say that the next great (U.S. civil) war after the war of the
rebellion (the Civil War of the 1860's between the North and the
South) would commence in a little town now called Chicago but at that
time it would have grown to be a very large city. And another brother
told me that the Prophet said that the cause of the next great trouble
of the United States would be the depreciation of the currency of the
United States. I believe I have given you all the facts in as short
and concise manner as possible."

Another quote regarding the Civil War itself comes from an interview
by Dr. Poulson with David Whitmer, printed in the Deseret News on
Friday, August 16, 1878:

Question: When will the temple be built in Independence?

Answer: Right after the great tribulation is over

Question: What do you mean by that?

Answer: A civil war more bloody and cruel than the rebellion. It will
be the smashing up of this nation, about which time the second great
work has to be done, a work like Joseph did, and the translation of
the sealed plates and peace all over

WHAT!!! "the next great trouble
of the United States would be the depreciation of the currency of the
United States." How would somebody just think of something like that a put it in their journal? This is happening right now, or in the next couple yrs.


And yet another Prophecy:

called the Republican, and the other the Democrat
party. These two parties will go to war and out of these two parties
will spring another party which will be the

DUALISM IN SECTION 87

I have been knocking this topic around for around a decade now.... My wife and I both arrived at this conclusion at the same time while reading a Conference Talk by Neal A. Maxwell (link later) where he alluded to the dualism in Section 87 of our Doctrine and Covenants.

1 Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls;
2 And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place.
3 For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations.
4 And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war.
5 And it shall come to pass also that the remnants who are left of the land will marshal themselves, and shall become exceedingly angry, and shall vex the Gentiles with a sore vexation.
6 And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full fend of all nations;

I have since sought confirmation that this was correct - and have obtained it. Holding this belief has brought me great grief and have been challenged by everyone from my Bishop to an old vague Facebook acquaintance who really dragged me over the coals. The thing that blows me away is that I have a Jewish friend at work (who is one of the Indian Jews descended from those who split from Jerusalem right before the Romans sacked the place in 69AD), who is more convinced that we are in trouble than I am and is buying food storage from Utah and most people I know in the Church could care less. Go figure....

Anyway, I came across some Journal of Discourses quotes that drives the fact home that we will see war on this soil - and I have to share:

JD, JOHN TAYLOR 20:318

Were we surprised when the last terrible war took place here in the United States? No; good Latter-day Saints were not, for they had been told about it. Joseph Smith had told them where it would start, that it should be a terrible time of bloodshed and that it should start in South Carolina. But I tell you today the end is not yet. You will see worse things than that, for God will lay his hand upon this nation, and they will feel it more terribly than ever they have done before; there will be more bloodshed, more ruin, more devastation than never they have seen before. Write it down! You will see it come to pass; it is only just starting in. And would you feel to rejoice? No; I would feel sorry. I knew very well myself when this last war was commencing, and could have wept and did weep, over this nation; but there is yet to come a sound of war, trouble and distress, in which brother will be arrayed against brother, father against son, son against father, a scene of desolation and destruction that will permeate our land until it will be a vexation to hear the report thereof.

What will become of millions of the farmers upon that land? They will leave their farms and they will remain uncultivated, and they will flee before the ravaging armies from place to place; and thus will they go forth burning and pillaging the whole country; and that great and powerful nation, now consisting of some forty millions of people, will be wasted away, unless they repent.

I saw men hunting the lives of their own sons, and brother murdering brother, women killing their own daughters, and daughters seeking the lives of their mothers. I saw armies arrayed against armies. I saw blood, desolation, fires. The Son of man has said that the mother shall be against the daughters, and the daughter against the mother. These things are at our doors. They will follow the Saints of God from city to city. Satan will rage, and the spirit of the devil is now enraged. I know not how soon these things will take place; but with a view of them, shall I cry peace? No; I will lift up my voice and testify of them. How long you will have good crops, and the famine be kept off, I do not know; when the fig tree leaves, know then that the summer is nigh at hand.

SUNKEN CITY OF ALEXANDRIA - CATASTROPHISM AT WORK

There are many examples of Catastrophism in this blog. Here is one of the bigger ones that I have been watching over the years. There is alot of subsidence (where large land masses just suddenly sink into the water) around the mid-belt region of the planet - whether Mediterranean or Carribean). Every major earthquake in the region results in land sinking (the most recent was the earthquake in Turkey). So there is a major phenomenon that needs further explanation and attention paid to it.

SIGNS OF THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST

There is very little in here that I can find to disagree with:

"THE SIGN" of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ

The scriptures speak of the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the signs that will precede and accompany His arrival. These prophecies strike dread in the hearts of the wicked, promise hope for the saints and in the calm before the coming storm, generates feelings that range from anxiety to shear terror for everyone. How important are the signs of the times to those of us that live in the Last Days? Why did the Lord, even through His Old Testament prophets, provide lists of latter-day events and conditions as signs of His impending return? Are we to study these signs as part of the restored gospel? These modern day scriptures provide the answer.
D&C 45:38-39 Even so it shall be in that day when they shall see all these things, then shall they know that the hour is nigh. And it shall come to pass that he that feareth me shall be looking forth for the great day of the Lord to come, even for the signs of the coming of the Son of Man.
44 And then they shall look for me, and, behold, I will come; and they shall see me in the clouds of heaven, clothed with power and great glory; with all the holy angels; and he that watches not for me shall be cut off.

Some signs refer to the restoration of the Lord's church but most speak of frightful calamities that will affect the whole world. Some even focus on events that will drastically disrupt the lives of members of the Lord's church here in the Rocky Mountains. Signs of the Second Coming started a long time ago and are fast becoming current events. The following are quotes from early church leaders, including the prophet Joseph Smith, and scriptures, both ancient and modern, about the signs that the world will witness as the great day of the Lord draws nearer. First, a short review of the "last days" judgments pronounced upon this nation, included to set the stage for the main focus expressed in the title of this study. To set this stage I begin with words of the prophet Joseph Smith: "I will prophesy that the signs of the coming of the Son of Man are already commenced. One pestilence will desolate after another. We shall soon have war and bloodshed. The moon will be turned into blood. I testify of these things, and that the coming of the Son of Man is nigh, even at your doors. ...The time is soon coming when no man will have any peace but in Zion and her Stakes."

Mosiah Hancock recorded a prophetic statement made by Joseph Smith, 8 days before his martyrdom: "There will be two great political parties in this country. Father will be against son, and son against father, mother against daughter, and daughter against mother. The most terrible scenes of murder and blood-shed and rapine that ever been looked upon will take place."

President Woodruff speaking of a time, still in our future, when all order in this nation will cease and mobs will begin to rule. The federal and state governments will literally cease to function.
"The judgments of God will now begin to rest more fully upon this nation and will be increased upon it, year by year. Calamities will come speedily upon it and it will be visited with thunder, lightning, storms, whirlwinds, floods, pestilence, plagues, war and devouring fire; the wicked will slay the wicked until the wicked are wasted away."
"Can you tell me where the people are who will be shielded and protected from these great calamities and judgments which are even now at our doors? I'll tell you. The priesthood of God who honor their priesthood and who are worthy of their blessings are the only ones who shall have this safety and protection. They are the only mortal beings. No other people have a right to be shielded from these judgments. They are at our doors; not even this people will escape them entirely."

President George Q. Cannon said: "You will see the day, and it is not far distant, when these mountains will be the stronghold of a free people, and when men will come here because the principles of the Constitution will be maintained here; and they will be protected in their political and religious rights." There will be no law and order; there will be confusion everywhere except here in the Rocky Mountains where the Church is headquartered. At first order will be maintained by the priesthood; there will be peace and security here while the rest of the nation destroys itself in anarchy. Because of this lawlessness, members of the church will not be the only ones that come to the Rocky Mountains seeking safety. George Q. Cannon, Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Orson Pratt, and Joseph Smith spoke to this fact.

Just prior to this time the call will go out for all Saints world wide to gather to the Rocky Mountains. Their instruction contained in D&C 133 will be "Let them, therefore, who are among the Gentiles flee unto Zion ...unto the mountains of the Lord's house. Go ye out from among the nations, even from Babylon, from the midst of wickedness, which is spiritual Babylon. But verily, thus saith the Lord, let not your flight be in haste, but let all things be prepared before you; and he that goeth, let him not look back lest sudden destruction shall come upon him." The Prophet Joseph Smith, speaking of the Saints that are called to gather to the Rocky Mountains gave this warning; "I prophecy, that that man who tarries after he has an opportunity of going, will be afflicted by the devil. Wars are at hand; we must not delay; but are not required to sacrifice. We ought to have the building up of Zion as our greatest object. When wars come, we shall have to flee to Zion. The cry is to make haste. ...They will follow the Saints of God from city to city."

Orson Pratt, speaking of the future of this nation, said: "it will be a war of neighborhood against neighborhood, city against city, town against town, county against county, state against state, and they will go forth, destroying and being destroyed and manufacturing will, in a great measure, cease, for a time among the American nation. Why? Because in these terrible wars, they will not be privileged to manufacture, there will be too much blood shed, too much mobocracy, too much going forth in bands and destroying and pillaging the land to suffer people to pursue any local vocation with any degree of safety. What will become of millions of the farmers upon that land? They will leave their farms and they will remain uncultivated, and they will flee before the ravages armies from place to place; and thus will they go forth burning and pillaging the whole country; and the great and powerful nation, now consisting of some forty millions of people, will be wasted away, unless they repent."

Brigham Young, speaking of this future gathering, to the Rocky Mountains, said; "An inland empire will be established in these valleys of the mountains, which will be a place of refuge for millions of people to gather to, when the great day of the judgments of God comes upon the earth, and the righteous come here for safety. Our people will go East, West, North, and South, but the day will come, when they will be glad to come back. We will be shut out from the rest of the world."

Another description of conditions in the United States is recorded in a vision attributed to Wilford Woodruff: "as I passed along upon my way east, I saw the road full of people, mostly women, with just what they could carry in bundles on their backs traveling to the mountains on foot. I wondered how they could get through with such a small pack on their back. It was remarkable to me that there were so few men among them. It did not seem to me as though the cars were running. The rails looked rusty and abandoned." Joseph Smith said: "You will be so numerous that you will be in danger of famine, but not for want of seed time and harvest, but because of so many to be fed. Many will come with bundles under their arms to escape the calamities, and there will be no escape except by fleeing to Zion."

With the Lord's church; the Kingdom of God was restored to the earth and has continued to grow within the church's organizational structure. According to the Prophet Joseph Smith the Kingdom of God is be a separate organization from the Church of God and will in the last days emerge as the presiding world government; the political arm of God on earth and will, eventually grow to hold worldwide dominion. Eventually, after the Kingdom has been established the church will turn its attention to reclaiming Zion and the return to Missouri for the building of the New Jerusalem.

Joseph F. Smith describes the journey in these words. "When God leads the people back to Jackson County, how will he do it? Let me picture to you how some of us may be gathered and led to Jackson County. I think I see two or three hundred thousand people wending their way across the great plains enduring the nameless hardships of the journey, herding and guarding their cattle by day and by night, and defending themselves and little ones from foes on the right hand and on the left, as when they came here. Note: the Law of Consecration (the United Order) will be established for this journey and for settling in Missouri.

The scriptures lists the numerous glorious and yet horrific calamities that will precede the second coming of Jesus Christ, but there is one all important sign referred to as THE sign of the Son of Man. Our understanding of what this sign will be, its symbolic meaning and how it will effect the world is key to seeing all other signs of the Second Coming from a correct perspective. The questions this study will address are: what will it be and when will we see it?

THE Sign:

The New Testament apostle; Matthew describes the appearance of THE sign as an event that will cause "all" to mourn:
"And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Latter-day scripture teaches that everyone will see THE sign together:
"And immediately there shall appear a great sign in heaven, and all people shall see it together."

Joseph Smith said that Jerusalem and her temple must be built and the waters of the Dead Sea healed before the Lord returns and then spoke of THE sign: ..."then will appear one grand sign of the Son of Man in heaven. But what will the world do? They will say it is a planet, a comet, etc. But the Son of Man will come as the sign of the coming of the Son of Man, which will be as the light of the morning cometh out of the east."
"For as the light of the morning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west, and covereth the whole earth, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be."

The symbol that is THE sign of the Second Coming will be something that "all people shall see ...together", and that will cause the people of the world to "say it is a planet".

A planet in our solar system, close enough for everyone to see together, or did these prophets mean something else? Parley P. Pratt, with information obviously received from the prophet, said: "We are nowhere given to understand that all the stars will fall or even many of them: but only "as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs when she is shaken with a mighty wind. The stars which will fall to the earth are fragments, which have been broken off from the earth from time to time, in the mighty convulsions of nature. Some in the days of Enoch, some perhaps in the days of Peleg, some with the ten tribes, and some at the crucifixion of the Messiah. These all must be restored again at the "times of restitution of all things." This will restore the ten tribes of Israel; and also bring again Zion, even Enoch's city. It will bring back the tree of life which is the midst of the paradise of God: that you and I may partake of it. When these fragments, (some of which are vastly larger than the present earth) are brought back and joined to this earth, it will cause a convulsion of all nature: the graves of the saints will be opened, and they rise from the dead; while the mountains will flow down, the vallies rise, the sea retire to it's own place, the islands and continents ill be removed, and earth be rolled together like a scroll. The earth will be many times larger than it is now." (Millennial Star, Vol. 1)

A similar statement, by Wilford Woodruff, also originating with Joseph Smith, reads: "Joseph also said that when the city of Enoch fled and was translated, it was where the Gulf of Mexico now is; it left that gulf a body of water."

Section 45 of the Doctrine and Covenants says: "And they shall see signs and wonders, for they shall be shown forth in the heavens above... if THE sign is to be a planet, what will be this heavenly wonder's affect upon the earth, its gravity, its oceans?
D&C 133: 23 "He shall command the great deep, and it shall be driven back into the north countries, and the islands shall become one land; ...and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided." foot note: Gen 10: 25 "...Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided;"

Orson Pratt makes reference to the division of the earth in the days of Peleg, a division that will be reversed with the restitution of all things: "Many changes were made upon the earth in the days of Enoch; and no doubt the flood occasioned still greater; but we must look to the days of Peleg for the division of the earth into continents and islands, and the letting in of the waters upon the equatorial regions," (The Seer, vol. II)

"Letting in the waters", brings to mind the question: from where? The only force that could possibly drive and then hold earth's oceans at the North Pole, both in the day of Peleg and again at a future date, is gravity. Remember this will be part of the "times of restitution of all things" and that it will require gravity generated by a planet of sufficient size and that is relatively close to the earth. Peleg; a grandson of Shem; Noah's son, lived on the earth at the time that the world's oceans long held at the north pole were released, causing what had to have been a flood second only to the flood of Noah. "like it was before it was divided" means that the earth as we know it will change drastically with the restoration of this sign to its place above the earth. Does "the earth divided" mean that half of it separated itself and moved to another location? Bathsheba W. Smith, wife of President George A. Smith wrote in her " Recollections of the Prophet Joseph Smith": "I heard him say; Peradventure, the Ten Tribes were not on this globe, but a portion of this earth cleaved off with them, went flying into space, and when the earth reels to and fro like a drunken man, and the stars from heaven fall, it would join on again." (Juvenile Instructor Vol. 27 - June 1892}

Oceans "driven back into the north countries" and then held at the North Pole, may be the cause of what John Taylor saw in a vision: "I seemed to be standing on the west bank of the Missouri River opposite the City of Independence, but I saw no city. I saw the whole states of Missouri and Illinois and part of Iowa were a complete wilderness with no living human being in them" If it is gravity that pulls "the great deep ...back into the north countries," the water presently filling the Gulf of Mexico would move northward, as the object generating the gravitation pull moves closer and closer. This would literally sweep Missouri and its neighboring states clean of all inhabitants.
Heber C. Kimball: "Missouri will be swept so clean of it's inhabitants that, as President Young tells us, when we return to that place, 'there will not be left so much as a yellow dog to wag his tail.' "

We have, from a list of scriptures and inspired teachings, established that the whole world will see "one grand sign of the Son of Man in heaven", that it will appear to be "a planet", that it will be one the "fragments, which have been broken off from the earth" some time in the distant past, that "the great deep"; the oceans, "shall be driven back into the north countries", and that "the whole states of Missouri and Illinois": will consequently have "no living human being in them."

The vision painted here is mind-boggling, but it lends understanding to several scriptures like this one in Revelation 6. These verses describe a scene so terrifying that it will cause "the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man" to hide "in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains" and to wish they could call for "the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:" In the preceding verses we learn that this fear follows "a great earthquake" of such immense magnitude that it will cause "every mountain and island were moved out of their places." In a catastrophe of this magnitude people would be busy rescuing the injured, clearing the rubble, and rebuilding damaged structures. There would be many survival concerns, but the scripture speaks of hiding. Will this sign that has drawn the oceans to the North Pole, swept the population off the mid American states, and caused an earthquake to end all earthquakes still be ominously perched overhead? Will this scene be taken to be, "the face of him that sitteth on the throne;" the Lord?

Another example worth considering is: the motive of the builders of the tower of Babel. Remember we're speaking of restoring to the earth portions that were removed anciently. First read Genesis 11:4, look into the sky, and ask yourself: would anyone really convince themselves that they could "build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven" without being able to see their destination. Now, picture the sky with THE sign near enough for its gravitational pull to hold the oceans at the North Pole and ask your self the same question. Orson F. Whitney in 1889 said: "This sounds, indeed, like a fairy tale ...intelligent enough to build a great tower of which the world has not since seen the counterpart, ...could cherish the idea that they could actually reach the sun, moon, or one of the stars, simply by piling brick upon brick and stone upon stone. But the Prophet Joseph Smith, whose mission it was to shed light upon the darkness of this generation, is said to have declared that it was not their intention to reach heaven, but to reach Zion, which was then suspended in mid-air, between heaven and earth, or at such a height as to render the project feasible".

Elder Joseph Young of the First Council of the Seventy and the brother of Brigham Young, claimed to have learned the following from Joseph Smith himself: "...Enoch and his people, with the city which they occupied, and the foundations on which it stood, with a large piece of earth immediately connected with the foundations and the city, had assumed an aerial position within the limits of our solar system..." Another student of the prophet, Orson Pratt noted: "The descendants of Noah not having faith sufficient to be caught up into Zion, concluded to build a tower sufficiently high to get there without being under the necessity of receiving a translation. From this it appears that the early descendants of Noah had an idea that Zion was located somewhere near the earth." (The Seer, Vol. II)

To generate a picture of this scene in our mind we have to consider the moon's size, it's proximity to the earth, and it's minimal tidal influence upon earth's oceans. Then try to imagine a globe of sufficient size and position to lift and hold all the earth's sea-water at the North Pole. This scene will also help us understand why a scroll was used as a scriptural symbol of the restitution of the earth to its pre-flood paradisiacal condition. We can easily picture, in our minds eye, another planet and the earth as they roll toward each other across the immensity of space and envision a scroll, seen from the end, being rolled together.
Isaiah 34:4 ...the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll
Revelation 6:14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
3 Nephi 26:3 ...the earth should be wrapt together as a scroll
Mormon 5:23 ...at his great command the earth shall be rolled together as a scroll
Mormon 9:2 ...that gporeat day when the earth shall be rolled together as a scroll

According to the prophet Joseph Smith THE sign of the second coming of Jesus Christ will be the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel returning to the earth and Orson Pratt, of another similar event, wrote: "This city will, most probably, not rest upon the earth but hover over it... This proves that there will be a glorified place above the surface of the earth... The Zion of Enoch, therefore, will probably be very near the earth, located over the American continent where it was anciently built; and most likely, will partake of the diurnal and annual revolutions of the earth, so as not to change it's relative position in regard to the western hemisphere of our planet."
In a statement above, the Apostle Parley P. Pratt spoke about "fragments... broken off from the earth" returning during the restitution of all things. He spoke not just about the City "of Enoch" but also of the lost "ten tribes." In an article published in the March 1892 Young Woman's Journal, O. B. Huntington, an intimate associate of the Prophet Joseph Smith and a Patriarch in Springville, Utah mentioned that the earth had two wings and drew them as semi-circles giving the earth the appearance of having polar elongations. Another friend, and onetime bodyguard of the Prophet, Philo Dibble is said to have received a diagram from the Prophet in 1842, which indicated the arrangement of this earth as a triple planet, at the time when the Ten Tribes were directed to the northern sphere.

The scene we are considering lends understanding to and makes it easier to picture the ten tribes traveling from the northern axis of the earth to the American continent. D&C 133 is describing a melting ice cap, is it melting because it will be covered by "the great deep"?
Verse 26: And they who are in the north countries shall come... ...and they shall smite the rocks, and the ice shall flow down at their presence. 27 And an highway shall be cast up in the midst of the great deep.

A "restitution of all things" would, of course, return the earth to its pre-flood condition. Something, not here now, will transform the climate and environment of the earth into a terrarium-like condition.
Genesis 2 ...the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

These are just a few examples, there are others that when considered under the light of the vision suggested above become clearer, easier to picture in our mind.
Revelation 8 ...a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; ...and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, ...and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

In this study we have established that THE sign of the second coming of Jesus Christ will be a now hidden planet moving into a position very close to the earth. The next question we will address is: when will all the earth see THE sign.

Several scriptures link the common elements of the appearance of THE sign to one frightful event in the future; the battle of Armageddon. Near the end of a three and half year siege upon the city of Jerusalem the Savior, even Jesus the Christ, will come to the rescue of the Jews. According to Zechariah: "the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle." The Old Testament prophet then outlines a couple of things about the day of the rescue that tie this scripture to other prophesies about this event: "And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

Though not emphasized as such, to consider the breaking of the Mount of Olives down the middle with the opposing halves moving away from each other, creating "a very great valley," to be just another earthquake is probably a bit of an understatement. The book of Revelation, again speaking of "a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon" describes the magnitude of the earthquake, along with "voices, and thunders and lightening," as a "great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty and earthquake, and so great" and concludes with "every island fled away and the mountains were not found." This earthquake to end all earthquakes will be caused by the same gravitation pull that will drive the seas of the world back to the "north countries." It will, by lifting and then releasing the rotating earth's upper crust; similar to the moon's tidal influence on the oceans of the world, level every mountain range on the planet, thus returning the surface of the earth to its original mountain-less condition. Genesis 7 says that the flood waters were just fifteen cubits; less than 25 foot deep: "and the mountains were covered." Ezekiel 38 described in specific detail the destruction to be caused by the earthquake resulting from the appearance of THE sign: "at the same time, when "Gog shall come against the land of Israel, ...there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground."

Zechariah continues with a second element unique to this prophesied event: "...And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light." Modern day scripture, section 88 of the Doctrine and Covenants, weaves the prophesied elements of the great battle Armageddon and the appearance of the Savior on the Mount of Olives into the appearance of THE sign of His Coming and the associated earthquake in these words: "For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face, and shall refuse to give light; ...earthquakes, that shall cause groanings in the midst of her, and men shall fall upon the ground and shall not be able to stand. ...And all things shall be in commotion; and surely, men's hearts shall fail them; for fear shall come upon all people. ...And immediately there shall appear a great sign in heaven, and all people shall see it together.
With a picture of THE sign in your mind read: Isaiah. 60:19-20; The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.
Will THE sign be self-luminous or perhaps reflective like a moon, will it partially obscure the light of the sun and moon?
Zech. 14:7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. 8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.

Section 88 describes what will happen following the appearance of THE "great sign in heaven" that "all people shall see ...together" "And there shall be silence in heaven for the space of half an hour; and immediately after shall the curtain of heaven be unfolded, as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face of the Lord shall be unveiled; And the saints that are upon the earth, who are alive, shall be quickened and be caught up to meet him. And they who have slept in their graves shall come forth, for their graves shall be opened; and they also shall be caught up to meet him ...They are Christ's, the first fruits,"
This is of course, speaking of the Coming of Jesus Christ in power and glory and the morning of the first resurrection when the saints, both the living and the resurrected dead will be caught up to meet him and then descend with Him. This appearance however, will not occur when Christ comes to Jerusalem to rescue the Jews. Section 88's "...half an hour" sounds like the Second Coming of the Savior will happen a short time after He makes His appearance upon the Mount of Olive until we remember: "that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." Half an hour of a thousand year day is about twenty one years which will allow ample time, after the battle, for the chores prophesied by the Old Testament prophet Ezekiel to be performed.
Ezek. 39:8-21 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken. And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years: So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord God. And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamon-gog. And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land. ...And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.

Taking a chronological step backward: before Christ makes His appearance at the climactic conclusion of the Battle of Armageddon, Gog; the modern day Russia, from "out of the north parts", will mount a siege; the abomination of desolation, upon the city of Jerusalem that will last three and a half years:
Dan. 12 ...and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time (battle of Armageddon): and at that time thy people shall be delivered (by Jesus Christ upon the Mount of Olives), ...And one said ...How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, ...it shall be for a time, times, and an half (3 ½ years); and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people (Israel), all these things shall be finished.
Dan. 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days (3 ½ years).
special note: verse 12 tells when the Savior will make His appearance: Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. (3 ½ years plus 45 days)
Rev. 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months (3 ½ years).
Rev. 13:4-5 And they (people of the world) worshipped the dragon (the devil) which gave power unto the beast (McConkie - government): and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months (3 ½ years)

"Gog" with "Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya ...will think an evil thought;" and "in the latter years ...come into the land ...against the mountain of Israel, ...to the land of unwalled villiages; ...to carry away silver and gold." This assault will turn into a 1,290 day; 42 month; three and a half year campaign; the "abomination of desolation" and will conclude 45 days later with the appearance of the Savior Jesus Christ in Jerusalem at which time an earthquake will literally level every mountain range on the earth and all men worldwide will witness the appearance of THE sign of the His Second Coming. This milestone event will be followed by a twenty one year "half an hour," then and only then will the world witness the long awaited second coming of Jesus Christ to reign upon the earth for a thousand years.

In conclusion, referencing again the restitution of all things before the Second Coming: in an interview of Homer Brown of the Forest Dale ward, Granite Stake: "Brother Brown, can you give us some light and explanation of the fifth verse ...which speaks of the Ten Tribes of Israel on part of the earth which now forms another planet, according to the composer, Eliza R. Snow?"
Eliza R. Snow a wife of the prophet wrote this poem:

"And when the Lord saw fit to hide
The ten lost tribes away,
Thou, earth, was severed to provide
The orb on which they stay."

And thus, from time to time, thy size
Has been diminished til
Thou seemest the law of sacrifice
Created to fulfill.

A "restitution" yet must come,
That will to thee restore,
By that grand law of worlds, thy sum
Of matter heretofore.

"Yes, sir, I think I can-I think I can answer that question. Sister Eliza R.
