Of course, we already know that they are declaring war on the heinous crime of uncovering the truth instead of the truth that our tax dollars are paying for the hacking apart of innocent babies and also to support ISIL in the hacking apart of innocent Christians...... We are in every bit as much a state of crisis as they were just before the uncivil war in 1861.

However, the list could be extended back in history as far back as Thomas Jefferson and the ongoing conflict between the United States and the Barbary states, autonomous provinces of the Ottoman Empire that rimmed the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. Soon after the Revolutionary War and the consequent loss of the British navy's protection, American merchant vessels had become prey for Barbary corsairs [Muslims]. Jefferson was outraged by the demands of ransom for civilians captured from American vessels and the Barbary states' expectation of annual tribute to be paid to the Muslims as insurance against future seizures of shipping.

The lyrics of the Marine Hymn were popular phrases before the song was written. The one line "To the shores of Tripoli" refers to this First Barbary War, and specifically the Battle of Derne in 1805.
