This is extremely well researched and I find it beyond disturbing.
Every major government that is being toppled right now (excepting Syria) has made an attempt to break out of the world banking system. This includes Libya and Iran. AMERICA - THE WHORE OF ALL THE EARTH
While I am more prone to look at abortion statistics and out-of-wedlock pregnancies when I cite the whore of all the earth rhetoric, I guess there is nothing more reassuring that we are in the number one spot than the following stats that someone compiled and put on LDSFREEDOMFORUM.COM. After reading again this chapter of Revelation I wanted to do some research and find out which countries imported the most of each of the goods listed in verses 12-13. Some thoughts on Gold: India is historically and culturally very big consumers of gold, so it comes as no surprise that they top the list. However, what is interesting is that China, who did not make the top 10 in 2005, suddenly by 2010 is the second largest gold buyer. Another interesting thing to note is who else also suddenly makes the top 10 who hadn't before... Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, and Russia – All Middle-Eastern and Communist countries. Why the sudden change? Might this be an indicator that they are gearing up and preparing for war? Historically it takes gold - lots of it - to wage war; it costs money to buy weapons, armor, resources, pay troops, and bribe other nations. Just something to think about.

I am a bit surprised that according to this data the U.S. ranks so low on sheep imports, however, from other sources I can find the U.S. indeed seems to import very little in the way of sheep. Still, only $156,000 for the entire year seems an unreasonable amount and I wonder if it might not be more.

Human trafficking and slavery. Due to the nature of this problem there is very little if any information and data available on which countries rank highest in terms of importation of human trafficking and slavery. One thing is for certain though, human trafficking and slavery in the United States is a very real problem, even if no one wants to acknowledge it. According to the Department of Education:
“Contrary to a common assumption, human trafficking is not just a problem in other countries. Cases of human trafficking have been reported in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and some U.S. territories. Victims of human trafficking can be children or adults, U.S. citizens or foreign nationals, male or female.

As can be seen by the above data, the United States ranks in the top 10 (and more often than not, the top 3) importers of every singly good listed by John in Revelation 18, other than sheep (ranked 65th), wheat (ranked 17th - ranked 8th however on wheat flour) , and marble (ranked 38th). The only other nation that can even come as close to the U.S. as being on as many of those top 10 lists of importers is Germany.
It is no gross understatement to say that America is (by far) the world’s largest consumer of luxury goods.

And, now, for the Main Horrible Crime Against Mankind, that was committed by those who began the City of Rome.
Those Founders of Rome came to understand that they could collect a Multiple of the Gold Coins that they collected in the Forum if, after the Western European Merchants, with their Cargoes, had exited out from the Forum, under the Fornix Exit Gate, they could have a Large Hotel, that they built, on the west side of the Apian Way Road, just after those Merchants had exited out from under the Fornix Exit Gate, where, on the many balconies of that Large Hotel they could have large numbers of women, calling down to those Merchants, that they had the best Hotel Accommodations in Italy, there, with the Finest Food, the Finest Most Comfortable Furniture, the Best Entertainment, etc., etc., in Italy, to get those Merchants to stop, and to rest there, before continuing on for the rest of their long journey to the South End of the Italian Peninsula.
That large “Hotel” was built there. And, since it was there, right next to the Fornix Exit Gate, it too was given the name of it being, “the Fornix.” And, it did become the source of a Multiple of the Gold Coins that the Romans collected in the Forum, which became the Main Source of that Large Volume of Income of the Gold Coins from Babylon that enabled those “Founders of Rome” to establish their “Roman Empire,” that has had the dominating effect that it has had on the Culture of the People of Europe and of the World until this time.
But, now, for the terrible Evil against Mankind, that was done there.
If a person looks up, in most Dictionaries, the origin of the word for the “sin” of “fornication,” most Dictionaries will give the origin of that word from the name, “the Fornix,” of that large Main “Hotel,” that the Ancient Romans built. That is, it might have been the Largest House of Prostitution that had ever been built, in the History of the World, maybe, even, down until the present time.
In The Revelation, Chapters 17 and 18, the word, “fornication,” which word came from those Romans’ Largest House of Prostitution in History, till that time, is used 6 times in those two Chapters.]

The question can come up of, “What was it that the Apostle, John the Revelator, meant, when he wrote, in The Revelation 17:5,
And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH?”
and in 18:19, where he said:
“for in one hour is she made desolate?”
It has seemed, to Commentators on this, throughout History, that an identification of that “MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH,” is made, in relation to the City of the Ancient Romans, in The Revelation 17:9, with:
9 And here is the mind that hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.
and in 17:18,where it is said:
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.
[One thing that is obvious to everyone in the World, about one “ignorance” that the Founders of Ancient Rome had, is that they thought that there were only 10 “Months” in a year. The word, “Month,” is an expression for how long it takes for the “Moon” to “spin around” the Planet Earth. It does that 12 times a year, each time of which is called a, “Month,” in Modern English, perhaps, a “Moonth,” in our Ancestral Anglo-Saxon.
So, to the Ancient Romans their word, “December,” meant the “10th” Month, “November,” meant the “9th” Month, “October,” meant the “8th” Month, and, “September,” meant the “7th” Month. When the Ancient Roman Emperors realized that they could not operate successfully, militarily, in Italy, against the Superior Military Operations of the North Europeans, and that those Roman Military Dictators needed to move their Military Headquarters out of Italy and over to Byzantium, they copied so many of the things that the North Europeans did, including the utilization among them of the fact that there are 12 Months in a year, by naming two of the Summer Months for those first Roman Emperors, Julius Caesar, and Augustus Caesar, the origin of the names, “July” and “August,” for those two Summer Months.]
The name of the Ancient Romans for the First Month, in the Summer, was for the primary ancient pagan goddess of the Romans, for which they used the name, “Juno,” the origin of the English word for the name of that Month, “June.”
The Ancient Roman Military Dictators operated their Military by the practice that, if a man would risk his life to go out to kill, according to the dictates of that Military Dictator, in exchange for a small “solid” Gold Coin, that man was given the name that he was a “solid-ier” of that Military Dictator, (the origin of the English word, “soldier”).
The Ancient Pagan Romans had ancient pagan Idols that they worshipped, in relation to their ancient pagan god and goddesses. One place where they worshipped an Idol of their pagan goddess Juno was near to the Fortress, on the north side of Rome, where the Solid-iers of Rome were stationed, to protect Rome against attackers.
So many in the populations of the Northern Europeans were so terribly offended at the Filthiness of the Lives of the Romans, that they destroyed the Decency of Life for so many of the male Merchants that were involved in that “Gold-Coin-Source Trade,” between Northern Europe and the South of Italy, that went through Rome, that so many of the People of Northern Europe wished so much that it would be possible, somehow, to destroy Rome. However, Rome was a long way away from Northern Europe; and, if the North Europeans were ever going to be able to get a large enough Military Force to the vicinity of Rome, so that it would be able to destroy Rome’s horrible Large House of Prostitution, it was understood that that attacking Army was going to need to be most clever in order to be able to get near enough to that horrible Large House of Prostitution in order to be able to do that.
However, eventually, one large Attacking Army had been able to secretly sneak up so close to that Fortress, that was there to stop Attacks against Rome, that it was almost ready to attack and destroy that Fortress and the “Army of Guards” that were in it, that they would have, then, been able to go to the south side of Rome and also destroy Rome’s horrible Large House of Prostitution.
However, just as that large attacking Army was sneaking though the last open space, before getting to that Fortress, it happened that that open space was a yard that was next to the place where the ancient pagan Romans worshipped their ancient pagan goddess, for which they used the name, Juno. And, it just happened that in the yard, that was in that final open space, there were a large flock of geese that had been put there. Then it happened that as that large attacking Army was trying so silently to sneak up close enough to that Fortress, so that they could attack it, while its Army of Guards were still mostly asleep, that flock of geese started cackling, at that those who in that Army of those Attackers. When that happened that cackling sound woke up some of those Guards, who, then, woke up all of the rest of that Army of Guards, who, from their Fortress, threw spears and shot down arrows, etc. at those Attackers. in such a way that they were able to stop that Attack.
After that Attack was defeated the talking began that, “That yard where those Geese are is the yard of the place where we worship our pagan goddess Juno. Those are the geese of our pagan goddess, Juno. Therefore, it was our pagan goddess, Juno, who ‘WARNED’ our Guards, through her geeses’ cackling, that woke up our Guards and stopped that Attack on the way that we do things here in Rome. THEREFORE, FROM NOW ON, LET’S CALL OUR PAGAN GODDESS JUNO, ‘JUNO THE WARNER.’”
One sees the basis of the Ancient Latin word for, “warn,” in the English word, “ad-monit-ion.” The, “monit” part of that word is the basis of the Ancient Latin word for, “warn.” Therefore, the Ancient Romans began calling their ancient pagan goddess, Juno, by the longer name, “Juno Moneta,” Ancient Latin for, “Juno the Warner.”
The point of this is that when the Romans began using some of all of that Babylonian Gold that they had, for them to begin “minting” their own Gold Coins, they did a lot of that minting in a place where they had a huge Idol of their pagan goddess, Juno Moneta. So, they began calling that place, that was their, “Mint,” their, “Moneta.” And, then, also, they began calling the Gold Coins that they “minted” there by that same name. And, those two names have continued in the Modern Latin Language of Spanish as, “una moneda,” which is the way that, “a coin,” is said in modern Spanish, and “la moneda,” which is the way that the expression, “the mint,” is said, in modern Spanish.
The French Language was different enough from Ancient Latin that the word, “moneda,” in Latin, came out as, “moneie,” in French. And, that French word, “moneie,” is the origin of our English word, “money.”
“What is a name that could be used for the ancient pagan ‘Culture” of Rome?” As they developed their “Ancient Roman Empire,” based upon the way that they “controlled life,” with the “monetas” (coins) of the Ancient Romans, among the populations of Southwest Europe, which area they made into their “Empire,” they did that with what most of the World would designate as a number of “evils.” One of what most people would call, “evils,” is that, when they so extended that Ancient Empire of theirs, it was estimated that about ½ of the people that made up the population that were the Subjects of those Roman Emperors were, “Slaves.” A “slave woman” has no ability to refuse when the Master who owns her decides that she will be sold to do prostitution services, at the behest of that Roman Master of hers.
And, so, since the “Culture of Money” of the Ancient Pagan Romans, that spread throughout the World, came from the Ancient Pagan Romans, and that Roman name for it continues, from the name of the main Ancient Pagan Goddess of the Ancient Romans, and since so much of the ancient Culture of the Ancient Pagan Romans came from the way that those Ancient Pagan Romans dealt with Mankind, through that which was named for their Ancient Pagan Goddess, Juno Moneta, it seems that the Apostle, John the Revelator, is speaking about that “continuation,” until this time, of that Culture of Rome, the Culture of Rome’s Main Pagan Goddess, Juno Moneta, “Money,” as he speaks about, “MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH,” that, “in one hour is she made desolate.”
It will literally take one hour (not 22 years in Kolob's reckoning) to wipe it all out. CAN'T WAIT..... I would like God's Millennial economy to take over and to finish raising my kids and grand kids in a society not centered on that garbage. There is almost no way to escape it now - EVEN IN THE CHURCH, WE HAVE RUN NEARLY 100% AMOK - but when it all comes crashing down, some of our Lamanite brothers and folks from the 10 Tribes who have lived without the constraints of our greed-centered world will be part of the solution in showing the way. I suspect that the Sealed Portion of the Book of Mormon will hold the rest of the key. They did something right to make it last for over 300 years.

WE MUST SUFFER IN ORDER TO BECOME A ZION PEOPLE
I may be a hopeless romantic - too idealistic to function in today's fallen world - or I am a realist.
God WILL have a Zion people that will be caught up into the heavens to meet Him when he comes in glory. In my opinion, this people has gone "a whorin' after Babylon" just a little too much and is filled with pride to the point that the mighty gulf between where we are now as a people, and where we need to be as a people is just too much to deal with unless there is a radical intervention.
I think the Lord hinted where the path we are on would take us:

Parents Need To Be Informed About Vaccine Content
Recently, I was disturbed to read a report, written by Rene Leiva, MD, entitled, “A Brief History of Human Diploid Cell Strains”. The report was copywrited in 2006 by the The National Catholic Bioethics Center; and appeared in the journal, The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly, autumn, 2006.
The paper is a seven-page-report that documents how for 35-plus years now, aborted, human fetal tissue has been an integral component in many of our current day vaccines.
In fact an examination of the CDC’s own website, under the vaccine ingredient section, discloses Human Diploid Cells (aborted human fetal tissue) as an ingredient…along with a host of substances known to be highly toxic to the human body, such as formaldehyde, formalin, ammonium, aluminum…and many others.
Recently, I was also disturbed to read a report, written by a very well known, respected investigative journalist…who also happens to have a law degree (“Vaccinations: Deadly Immunity”, by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. …very carefully sourced…and published in both Rolling Stone and Salon). The report cited transcripts obtained through the Freedom of Information Act – about a secret meeting that took place in June of 2000, at an isolated location; a retreat center called the Simpsonwood Conference Center, in Norcross Georgia. The meeting was convened by government officials of the CDC (Center For Disease Control); and included representatives of every major manufacturer, within the multi-billion-dollar vaccine industry.
Those transcripts of the meeting, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act reveal something very disturbing: The topic of discussion was about how they knew the vaccines were harming millions of children…and steps they should take to keep that information from the public.
Sadly, it seems to me – information disclosed to the public about vaccinations is more often than not, information that has been carefully screened and sculpted by those who stand to profit, often to the tune of billions of dollars – by perpetuating certain public beliefs.
It is my belief that parents and grandparents should exercise their right to inform themselves through sources independent from those that stand to profit by their choices – so that they might truly make informed decisions.

The scriptures use many names; the little horn, great and abominable church, the whore of the earth, kingdom of Satan, secret combinations, etc.
Modern prophets have pointed out Marxists and Islamic Jihadists are secret combinations.
Cleon Skousen has added the “Super Rich” in the ‘Naked Capitalist’ and others have added other organizations such as the CFR, Bilderbergers, etc.
My theory is that there is a Master Mahan today who uses these groups for his nefarious ends and is the representative of the Kingdom of Satan on the earth just as God has called Thomas S. Monson to be His representative on earth. Remember that there is opposition in all things. Can you imagine the power of a Master Mahan who can get reports from any evil spirit watching mankind from anywhere around the world?

The Five Stages of Collapse

Elizabeth Kübler-Ross defined the five stages of coming to terms with grief and tragedy as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, and applied it quite successfully to various forms of catastrophic personal loss, such as death of a loved one, sudden end to one's career, and so forth. Several thinkers, notably James Howard Kunstler and, more recently John Michael Greer, have pointed out that the Kübler-Ross model is also quite terrifyingly accurate in reflecting the process by which society as a whole (or at least the informed and thinking parts of it) is reconciling itself to the inevitability of a discontinuous future, with our institutions and life support systems undermined by a combination of resource depletion, catastrophic climate change, and political impotence. But so far, little has been said specifically about the finer structure of these discontinuities. Instead, there is to be found a continuum of subjective judgments, ranging from "a severe and prolonged recession" (the prediction we most often read in the financial press), to Kunstler's "Long Emergency," to the ever-popular "Collapse of Western Civilization," painted with an ever-wider brush-stroke.
For those of us who have already gone through all of the emotional stages of reconciling ourselves to the prospect of social and economic upheaval, it might be helpful to have a more precise terminology that goes beyond such emotionally charged phrases. Defining a taxonomy of collapses might prove to be more than just an intellectual exercise: based on our abilities and circumstances, some of us may be able to specifically plan for a certain stage of collapse as a temporary, or even permanent, stopping point. Even if society at the current stage of socioeconomic complexity will no longer be possible, and even if, as Tainter points in his "Collapse of Complex Societies," there are circumstances in which collapse happens to be the correct adaptive response, it need not automatically cause a population crash, with the survivors disbanding into solitary, feral humans dispersed in the wilderness and subsisting miserably. Collapse can be conceived of as an orderly, organized retreat rather than a rout.
For instance, the collapse of the Soviet Union - our most recent and my personal favorite example of an imperial collapse - did not reach the point of political disintegration of the republics that made it up, although some of them (Georgia, Moldova) did lose some territory to separatist movements. And although most of the economy shut down for a time, many institutions, including the military, public utilities, and public transportation, continued to function throughout. And although there was much social dislocation and suffering, society as a whole did not collapse, because most of the population did not lose access to food, housing, medicine, or any of the other survival necessities. The command-and-control structure of the Soviet economy largely decoupled the necessities of daily life from any element of market psychology, associating them instead with physical flows of energy and physical access to resources. This situation, as I argue in my forthcoming book, Reinventing Collapse, allowed the Soviet population to inadvertently achieve a greater level of collapse-preparedness than is currently possible in the United States.
Having given a lot of thought to both the differences and the similarities between the two superpowers - the one that has collapsed already, and the one that is collapsing as I write this - I feel ready to attempt a bold conjecture, and define five stages of collapse, to serve as mental milestones as we gauge our own collapse-preparedness and see what can be done to improve it. Rather than tying each phase to a particular emotion, as in the Kübler-Ross model, the proposed taxonomy ties each of the five collapse stages to the breaching of a specific level of trust, or faith, in the status quo. Although each stage causes physical, observable changes in the environment, these can be gradual, while the mental flip is generally quite swift. It is something of a cultural universal that nobody (but a real fool) wants to be the last fool to believe in a lie.
Stages of Collapse
Stage 1: Financial collapse. Faith in "business as usual" is lost. The future is no longer assumed resemble the past in any way that allows risk to be assessed and financial assets to be guaranteed. Financial institutions become insolvent; savings are wiped out, and access to capital is lost.
Stage 2: Commercial collapse. Faith that "the market shall provide" is lost. Money is devalued and/or becomes scarce, commodities are hoarded, import and retail chains break down, and widespread shortages of survival necessities become the norm.
Stage 3: Political collapse. Faith that "the government will take care of you" is lost. As official attempts to mitigate widespread loss of access to commercial sources of survival necessities fail to make a difference, the political establishment loses legitimacy and relevance.
Stage 4: Social collapse. Faith that "your people will take care of you" is lost, as local social institutions, be they charities or other groups that rush in to fill the power vacuum run out of resources or fail through internal conflict.
Stage 5: Cultural collapse. Faith in the goodness of humanity is lost. People lose their capacity for "kindness, generosity, consideration, affection, honesty, hospitality, compassion, charity" (Turnbull, The Mountain People). Families disband and compete as individuals for scarce resources. The new motto becomes "May you die today so that I die tomorrow" (Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago). There may even be some cannibalism.
Although many people imagine collapse to be a sort of elevator that goes to the sub-basement (our Stage 5) no matter which button you push, no such automatic mechanism can be discerned. Rather, driving us all to Stage 5 will require that a concerted effort be made at each of the intervening stages. That all the players seem poised to make just such an effort may give this collapse the form a classical tragedy - a conscious but inexorable march to perdition - rather than a farce ("Oops! Ah, here we are, Stage 5." - "So, whom do we eat first?" - "Me! I am delicious!") Let us sketch out this process.
Financial collapse, as we are are currently observing it, consists of two parts. One is that a part of the general population is forced to move, no longer able to afford the house they bought based on inflated assessments, forged income numbers, and foolish expectations of endless asset inflation. Since, technically, they should never have been allowed to buy these houses, and were only able to do so because of financial and political malfeasance, this is actually a healthy development. The second part consists of men in expensive suits tossing bundles of suddenly worthless paper up in the air, ripping out their remaining hair, and (some of us might uncharitably hope) setting themselves on fire on the steps of the Federal Reserve. They, to express it in their own vernacular, "[screwed] up," and so this is also just as it should be.
The government response to this could be to offer some helpful homilies about "the wages of sin" and to open a few soup kitchens and flop houses in a variety of locations including Wall Street. The message would be: "You former debt addicts and gamblers, as you say, '[screwed] up,' and so this will really hurt for a long time. We will never let you anywhere near big money again. Get yourselves over to the soup kitchen, and bring your own bowl, because we don't do dishes." The pit IMO is the crisis that is now being manufactured by the great and abominable church. Satan’s hope is to destroy the Church, first financially (less money, less missionary work and temples), then through tyranny and lose of religious and other freedoms. Lucifer also gets the benefit of death and destruction which he loves and revels in.
Using Orlov’s Five Stages this is what I see;
1.We have gone through stages one and two due to the printing of trillions of dollars (QE 1, 2 and 3?), the bail outs, and almost 0% interest rates which will cause the collapse of the dollar which will in turn collapse every other world currency since they were all tied to the dollar at Bretton Woods. The Euro may even go first and take us down with it.
2.Stage three began in Europe two years ago, spread to the Middle East and now here with the mass demonstrations created by the Marxist Revolutionaries, Unions, and Leftists Soros funded groups. They want this to increase in intensity till the people to cry for a solution.
3.Next they will offer the solution they have been planning for, “top down, bottom up, inside out”. "Capitalism failed so we must replace it with Socialism or even better Communism". “In order to create this new system and bring back peace and order we may have to sacrifice a few liberties for a while.” “A World Bank and World Currency would solve the financial crises.”
4.A Middle East War or even World War would be a nice touch to send the whole world over the cliff of collapse. One spark would set it off. Too many flash points around. After WW I we got the League of Nations. After WW II we got the United Nations. What are they planning after WW III? The whole World will go into stage 3, Political collapse. Wars will increase and governments across the globe will be overthrown by dictators or false 'democracies'. Evil men will desire to take over other regions as their economies collapse. What will countries like Russia, China, N. Korea, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, etc. be willing to do to salvage their countries and economies? Areas of the world and our country will fall to stages 4 & 5 during this period. Missionaries called home during the anarchy.
5.The plan is to have the sheeple of the world be convinced that a World Government and economic system will be required to save mankind. Do away with all these warring armies and have one world army. Do away with all of these collapsing governments when only one is needed. Have one police force. Have one religion incorporating all that is good and get rid of all of the religious strife.
The problem with digging a pit to trap your enemy is that you may fall in yourself. This is what God has prophesied will happen. The pit dug by Master Mahan and his secret combinations will be their own down fall. Hard to control a fire once it is set.

The scriptures use many names; the little horn, great and abominable church, the whore of the earth, kingdom of Satan, secret combinations, etc.
Modern prophets have pointed out Marxists and Islamic Jihadists are secret combinations.
Cleon Skousen has added the “Super Rich” in the ‘Naked Capitalist’ and others have added other organizations such as the CFR, Bilderbergers, etc.
My theory is that there is a Master Mahan today who uses these groups for his nefarious ends and is the representative of the Kingdom of Satan on the earth just as God has called Thomas S. Monson to be His representative on earth. Remember that there is opposition in all things. Can you imagine the power of a Master Mahan who can get reports from any evil spirit watching mankind from anywhere around the world?

The Five Stages of Collapse

Elizabeth Kübler-Ross defined the five stages of coming to terms with grief and tragedy as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, and applied it quite successfully to various forms of catastrophic personal loss, such as death of a loved one, sudden end to one's career, and so forth. Several thinkers, notably James Howard Kunstler and, more recently John Michael Greer, have pointed out that the Kübler-Ross model is also quite terrifyingly accurate in reflecting the process by which society as a whole (or at least the informed and thinking parts of it) is reconciling itself to the inevitability of a discontinuous future, with our institutions and life support systems undermined by a combination of resource depletion, catastrophic climate change, and political impotence. But so far, little has been said specifically about the finer structure of these discontinuities. Instead, there is to be found a continuum of subjective judgments, ranging from "a severe and prolonged recession" (the prediction we most often read in the financial press), to Kunstler's "Long Emergency," to the ever-popular "Collapse of Western Civilization," painted with an ever-wider brush-stroke.
For those of us who have already gone through all of the emotional stages of reconciling ourselves to the prospect of social and economic upheaval, it might be helpful to have a more precise terminology that goes beyond such emotionally charged phrases. Defining a taxonomy of collapses might prove to be more than just an intellectual exercise: based on our abilities and circumstances, some of us may be able to specifically plan for a certain stage of collapse as a temporary, or even permanent, stopping point. Even if society at the current stage of socioeconomic complexity will no longer be possible, and even if, as Tainter points in his "Collapse of Complex Societies," there are circumstances in which collapse happens to be the correct adaptive response, it need not automatically cause a population crash, with the survivors disbanding into solitary, feral humans dispersed in the wilderness and subsisting miserably. Collapse can be conceived of as an orderly, organized retreat rather than a rout.
For instance, the collapse of the Soviet Union - our most recent and my personal favorite example of an imperial collapse - did not reach the point of political disintegration of the republics that made it up, although some of them (Georgia, Moldova) did lose some territory to separatist movements. And although most of the economy shut down for a time, many institutions, including the military, public utilities, and public transportation, continued to function throughout. And although there was much social dislocation and suffering, society as a whole did not collapse, because most of the population did not lose access to food, housing, medicine, or any of the other survival necessities. The command-and-control structure of the Soviet economy largely decoupled the necessities of daily life from any element of market psychology, associating them instead with physical flows of energy and physical access to resources. This situation, as I argue in my forthcoming book, Reinventing Collapse, allowed the Soviet population to inadvertently achieve a greater level of collapse-preparedness than is currently possible in the United States.
Having given a lot of thought to both the differences and the similarities between the two superpowers - the one that has collapsed already, and the one that is collapsing as I write this - I feel ready to attempt a bold conjecture, and define five stages of collapse, to serve as mental milestones as we gauge our own collapse-preparedness and see what can be done to improve it. Rather than tying each phase to a particular emotion, as in the Kübler-Ross model, the proposed taxonomy ties each of the five collapse stages to the breaching of a specific level of trust, or faith, in the status quo. Although each stage causes physical, observable changes in the environment, these can be gradual, while the mental flip is generally quite swift. It is something of a cultural universal that nobody (but a real fool) wants to be the last fool to believe in a lie.
Stages of Collapse
Stage 1: Financial collapse. Faith in "business as usual" is lost. The future is no longer assumed resemble the past in any way that allows risk to be assessed and financial assets to be guaranteed. Financial institutions become insolvent; savings are wiped out, and access to capital is lost.
Stage 2: Commercial collapse. Faith that "the market shall provide" is lost. Money is devalued and/or becomes scarce, commodities are hoarded, import and retail chains break down, and widespread shortages of survival necessities become the norm.
Stage 3: Political collapse. Faith that "the government will take care of you" is lost. As official attempts to mitigate widespread loss of access to commercial sources of survival necessities fail to make a difference, the political establishment loses legitimacy and relevance.
Stage 4: Social collapse. Faith that "your people will take care of you" is lost, as local social institutions, be they charities or other groups that rush in to fill the power vacuum run out of resources or fail through internal conflict.
Stage 5: Cultural collapse. Faith in the goodness of humanity is lost. People lose their capacity for "kindness, generosity, consideration, affection, honesty, hospitality, compassion, charity" (Turnbull, The Mountain People). Families disband and compete as individuals for scarce resources. The new motto becomes "May you die today so that I die tomorrow" (Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago). There may even be some cannibalism.
Although many people imagine collapse to be a sort of elevator that goes to the sub-basement (our Stage 5) no matter which button you push, no such automatic mechanism can be discerned. Rather, driving us all to Stage 5 will require that a concerted effort be made at each of the intervening stages. That all the players seem poised to make just such an effort may give this collapse the form a classical tragedy - a conscious but inexorable march to perdition - rather than a farce ("Oops! Ah, here we are, Stage 5." - "So, whom do we eat first?" - "Me! I am delicious!") Let us sketch out this process.
Financial collapse, as we are are currently observing it, consists of two parts. One is that a part of the general population is forced to move, no longer able to afford the house they bought based on inflated assessments, forged income numbers, and foolish expectations of endless asset inflation. Since, technically, they should never have been allowed to buy these houses, and were only able to do so because of financial and political malfeasance, this is actually a healthy development. The second part consists of men in expensive suits tossing bundles of suddenly worthless paper up in the air, ripping out their remaining hair, and (some of us might uncharitably hope) setting themselves on fire on the steps of the Federal Reserve. They, to express it in their own vernacular, "[screwed] up," and so this is also just as it should be.
The government response to this could be to offer some helpful homilies about "the wages of sin" and to open a few soup kitchens and flop houses in a variety of locations including Wall Street. The message would be: "You former debt addicts and gamblers, as you say, '[screwed] up,' and so this will really hurt for a long time. We will never let you anywhere near big money again. Get yourselves over to the soup kitchen, and bring your own bowl, because we don't do dishes." The pit IMO is the crisis that is now being manufactured by the great and abominable church. Satan’s hope is to destroy the Church, first financially (less money, less missionary work and temples), then through tyranny and lose of religious and other freedoms. Lucifer also gets the benefit of death and destruction which he loves and revels in.
Using Orlov’s Five Stages this is what I see;
1.We have gone through stages one and two due to the printing of trillions of dollars (QE 1, 2 and 3?), the bail outs, and almost 0% interest rates which will cause the collapse of the dollar which will in turn collapse every other world currency since they were all tied to the dollar at Bretton Woods. The Euro may even go first and take us down with it.
2.Stage three began in Europe two years ago, spread to the Middle East and now here with the mass demonstrations created by the Marxist Revolutionaries, Unions, and Leftists Soros funded groups. They want this to increase in intensity till the people to cry for a solution.
3.Next they will offer the solution they have been planning for, “top down, bottom up, inside out”. "Capitalism failed so we must replace it with Socialism or even better Communism". “In order to create this new system and bring back peace and order we may have to sacrifice a few liberties for a while.” “A World Bank and World Currency would solve the financial crises.”
4.A Middle East War or even World War would be a nice touch to send the whole world over the cliff of collapse. One spark would set it off. Too many flash points around. After WW I we got the League of Nations. After WW II we got the United Nations. What are they planning after WW III? The whole World will go into stage 3, Political collapse. Wars will increase and governments across the globe will be overthrown by dictators or false 'democracies'. Evil men will desire to take over other regions as their economies collapse. What will countries like Russia, China, N. Korea, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, etc. be willing to do to salvage their countries and economies? Areas of the world and our country will fall to stages 4 & 5 during this period. Missionaries called home during the anarchy.
5.The plan is to have the sheeple of the world be convinced that a World Government and economic system will be required to save mankind. Do away with all these warring armies and have one world army. Do away with all of these collapsing governments when only one is needed. Have one police force. Have one religion incorporating all that is good and get rid of all of the religious strife.
The problem with digging a pit to trap your enemy is that you may fall in yourself. This is what God has prophesied will happen. The pit dug by Master Mahan and his secret combinations will be their own down fall. Hard to control a fire once it is set.

RANT AGAINST OUR TELESTIAL BANKING SYSTEM
THIS IS FROM A LETTER TO MY SISTER (WHO WORKS IN THE BANKING INDUSTRY) ABOUT THE STATUS OF OUR IMPENDING FORECLOSURE. I AM NOT A BIG FAN OF BANKS, LATELY - BUT THIS GOES BACK FOR YEARS AS I HAVE PLAYED ALONG WITH THE SYSTEM LOOKING FOR A NICE WAY TO EXIT IT. PRETTY MUCH GREEDY BLOOD-SUCKING PARASITES IN OUR SOCIETY. IN THE SAME CATEGORY WITH MOST LAWYERS AND OTHERS WHO MAKE THEIR LIVINGS OFF THE MIS-FORTUNES OF OTHERS WITH THE GUISE OF BEING YOUR BEST FRIEND AND HAVING YOUR BEST INTEREST IN MIND..... HERE GOES.
We are grinding thru the process of foreclosure. Not sure how long its going to take - but we can't pay for both places so we had to dump one. Lets just consider it re-taking my fair share (of any possible inheritance) of what the banks (in general - not People's) ripped off from Dad when they gave him that loan at 24% for $250,000 and then snagged and sold the place for over $450,000 and pocketed a cool $200K for their "risk" during the 6 months not including all the fees and stuff they collected when he closed on the loan..... Still miffed at that. Kelly P. just took it in the shorts and probably was the final straw in his divorce that just happened a few months ago. A place that still was worth $400K when they took it and sold it (probably for what it was worth) to cover the remaining (just over) $200K note on it. That was right around $200K in their pocket, as well. They would not work with him to reverse mortgage up to the value of the home until he could get his business back on its feet again. Makes me boil. Grrrrrr...... That place was perfect for his kid in the wheelchair - all one level with custom doors and bathrooms so he could get around the entire house. Now I thinks its a double-wide - so he will be relegated to a few rooms in the house where his chair can get around. Not cool, man..... These chumps that say "its just business man" are getting the same response from me..... During good times when things were above water, if I could not make payments, its three months and I am out on the curb - just as Dad found out. With me on the S______ house, I gave them the same response - we are under water and they are scrambling to get me to work with them. Sorry, the deal was three months and I am out on the curb; it was always that way in my mind. I am going along with the original conditions I have been living under for the last 20 years and not asking for any special favors or reconsideration. Those were the rules, right? They held all the cards for all that time - and now want to try and give me their king of spades. Well, I am not a joker.....the hypocrisy and double-handed tactics are appalling and I am no longer playing. Considering the average length of home ownership is 7 years and all the interest payments are stacked up front during those seven years - we have nothing to show for our $125K investment in the last 6+ years other than a nifty little tax writeoff - no doubt set up by the big bank lobby to keep stupid people (like myself) on the treadmill for as long as they can squeeze more out of me. Its all rigged, man. We are truly either stupid, or good little obedient minions. "Just do as you are told - and it will all be fine." The number of people who think I am immoral is amazing - they cannot see through the smokey colored glasses they have been wearing their entire lives. IF YOU CANNOT PAY AFTER THREE MONTHS, HOUSE GOES BACK TO BANK..... SIMPLE..... No double set of rules, if I remember right. Also, the Private Mortgage Insurance I was forced to pay - that's what its for..... Also, the nearly $5000 I was asked to pay up front (out of pocket) on closing on this loan as an insurance against default - you gonna need it baby! Hope you didn't pay it out to some bankster as a bonus to help salve the former conscience against all the mayhem you have done in the name of "its just business, baby....".
From here on out its pretty much cash only or zero percent or I do not play. I know it sounds very rebel and Montana'ish, but that's how I feel.
In the Millennium, there will be no inflation/deflation or even interest charged on mediums of exchange. Those tactics are not in God's economy. Our supply/demand economy will no longer exist in that scenario - even though its gets the job done in a telestial world. The Law of Consecration and the Councils of 50 will regulate the monetary concerns and I think it will do quite well with people of a terrestrial nature who do not take advantage of others due to their lack. The culture in that day will be much like the Mennonite or Amish or kibbutz groups. I look forward to it - with the wicked purged, people will just help each other because it is the right thing to do. Money (as it now stands) will be gone - and the armies and false priests (and lobbyists/lawyers/blood-suckers) who its bought with, who oppress and create havoc and unholy terror on this earth will be cleansed because those who remain will no longer support it as a bloc. I for one, cannot wait for it. This may be very offensive to some in the industry (Roger P. was pissed when I wrote a treatise on this on FB - and I was promptly de-friended), but it is God's will and it will be revealed in its entirety when we finally get the sealed portion of the Book of Mormon translated just prior to the Millennial light bursting on the scene. In it (I suppose) are all the secrets and descriptions of how the people were able to pull off a millennial existence for 300+ years without the cultural crap we currently have here in America. Ponder on it, though. You will find its all good stuff. As I dig up and place the quotes on my blog that back this, I think the picture will be pretty clear.

WILL THERE BE A GENERAL CALLOUT BY OUR GENERAL AUTHORITIES??
First of all, I want to throw a disclaimer out there on this blog. What you may be reading is just strictly my personal musings and journey that has brought be to this point in my life. Each individual (couple) have to decide what is right for themselves through the instrumentality of the Spirit of the Lord and then act decisively on that information and direction.
I have no stewardship other than for my own family and for our situation - and then maybe the information and direction I am given may be used by others and applied to their individual circumstances. And I am quite fine with that - because it is an excessive burden to even begin to care about my own family - let alone others. I have passed this information along to my good Bishop - and he now bears the burden for his own family and the extended ward family over which he has stewardship. I once tried to pass on the (now) fact two years ago to our Stake President (in a temple recommend interview) that we were just entering a full-blown depression in which home values would ultimately plummet 40% and inflation (here in the US) would eventually reach Weimar Republic levels. I got the roll of the eyes and the 'move along' body language - and we are now fully in it (hyper-inflation just around the corner) just as stated. I don't get most of this stuff for myself - I just study the existing stuff that is already out there, obtain a witness for myself and just watch it unfold. Pretty easy stuff to do. It reads like a book when compared against existing case histories from the past.
So are we going to be warned and spoon fed by the Bretheren in SLC when this stuff unfolds? I think not. Name one time in the recent 100 years when we have been spoon fed information that should flow to us along the lines of personal revelation? I personally cannot think of one time. When the first Great Depression was looming, there was not a peep that I am aware of from official channels and yet there was widespread suffering among the Saints. Not a peep that I am aware of from the top level officials or local officials in the case of the Japanese disaster. There was much reactionary actions to be sure - but no direct foreknowledge and preparations made. We already have been given all we need - make a seven/two/one/0.5/0.25 years food supply ready for a time of disaster and need and stay out of debt. Where is that taking most people? Well, that counsel has somehow led many to buy a 52" LCD, a mini-mansion on the fault line (with a view, of course) and live it up filling your homes with the filth of Babylon - but no savings of at least six months in case of a rainy day.
If we will not heed the basics - why should they give us something that might "save" us when we have trampled everything else they have said. The trap is set, the prey has taken the bait, and it is about to spring and snap our necks. Living in SLC years ago, I used to go to City Creek with the Youth on clean-ups for service hours and was shocked to find discarded clothing all over in the bushes where people had left it after hooking up following a 'casual encounter'. Much of that involved non-members, but it never-the-less left me impressed as to the wickedness of that city, just as predicted by Heber C Kimball. There must needs be a separation of the righteous and the wicked - so that the tares can be burned. This will be the object of what is coming and we should take heed to avoid it - or leave Babylon. If we are still flirting with Babylon - we will never get it out of our system because we can never fully divest ourselves of it. It has to be a conscious decision to do it - there has to be a will that wells up from in us or we will never be "millennial material". If the thought of going to Vegas excites us - pretty much forget about it. That place will have a nuke squarely planted on it - and then what will it be? Before that happens, hopefully the honest in heart will feel the need to flee and get the heck out while the getting is good.

Name one time in the recent 100 years when we have been spoon fed information that should flow to us along the lines of personal revelation? I personally cannot think of one time. When the first Great Depression was looming, there was not a peep that I am aware of from official channels and yet there was widespread suffering among the Saints. Not a peep that I am aware of from the top level officials or local officials in the case of the Japanese disaster. There was much reactionary actions to be sure - but no direct foreknowledge and preparations made. We already have been given all we need - make a seven/two/one/0.5/0.25 years food supply ready for a time of disaster and need and stay out of debt. Where is that taking most people? Well, that counsel has somehow led many to buy a 52" LCD, a mini-mansion on the fault line (with a view, of course) and live it up filling your homes with the filth of Babylon - but no savings of at least six months in case of a rainy day.
If we will not heed the basics - why should they give us something that might "save" us when we have trampled everything else they have said. The trap is set, the prey has taken the bait, and it is about to spring and snap our necks. Living in SLC years ago, I used to go to City Creek with the Youth on clean-ups for service hours and was shocked to find discarded clothing all over in the bushes where people had left it after hooking up following a 'casual encounter'. Much of that involved non-members, but it never-the-less left me impressed as to the wickedness of that city, just as predicted by Heber C Kimball. There must needs be a separation of the righteous and the wicked - so that the tares can be burned. This will be the object of what is coming and we should take heed to avoid it - or leave Babylon. If we are still flirting with Babylon - we will never get it out of our system because we can never fully divest ourselves of it. It has to be a conscious decision to do it - there has to be a will that wells up from in us or we will never be "millennial material". If the thought of going to Vegas excites us - pretty much forget about it. That place will have a nuke squarely planted on it - and then what will it be? Before that happens, hopefully the honest in heart will feel the need to flee and get the heck out while the getting is good.

Leaders to Managers: The Fatal Shift

This speech was delivered at the BYU commencement ceremony on 19 August 1983 after Nibley had received an honorary doctor of letters degree; it was published as "Leaders to Managers: The Fatal Shift," Dialogue 16/4 (Winter 1983): 12—21.
Twenty-three years ago today, if you will cast your minds back, on this same occasion I gave the opening prayer in which I said: "We have met here today clothed in the black robes of a false priesthood . . ." Many have asked me since whether I really said such a shocking thing, but nobody has ever asked what I meant by it. Why not? Well, some knew the answer already; and as for the rest, we do not question things at "the BYU." But for my own relief, I welcome this opportunity to explain.
Why a priesthood? Because these robes originally denoted those who had taken clerical orders; and a college was a "mystery," with all the rites, secrets, oaths, degrees, tests, feasts, and solemnities that go with initiation into higher knowledge.
But why false? Because it is borrowed finery, coming down to us through a long line of unauthorized imitators. It was not until 1893 that "an intercollegiate commission was formed . . . to draft a uniform code for caps, gowns, and hoods" in the United States.1 Before that there were no rules. You could design your own; and that liberty goes as far back as these fixings can be traced. The late Roman emperors, as we learn from the infallible DuCange, marked each step in the decline of their power and glory by the addition of some new ornament to the resplendent vestments that proclaimed their sacred office and dominion. Branching off from them, the kings of the tribes who inherited the lands and the claims of the empire vied with each other in imitating the Roman masters, determined to surpass even them in the theatrical variety and richness of caps and gowns.
One of the four crowns worn by the Emperor was the mortarboard. The French kings got it from Charlemagne, the model and founder of their royal lines. To quote DuCange:
When the French kings quitted the palace at Paris to erect a Temple of Justice, at the same time they conferred their royal adornments on those who would preside therein, so that the judgments that came from their mouths would have more weight and authority with the people, as if they were coming from the mouth of the Prince himself. [That's the idea of the robe of the prophet, descending on his successor.] It is to these connections that the mortarboards and the scarlet and ermine robes of the Chancellors of France and the Presidents of Parlement are to be traced. Their gowns or epitogia [the loose robe thrown over the rest of the clothing, to produce the well-known greenhouse effect] are still made in the ancient fashion. . . . The name "mortarboard" is given to the diadem because it is shaped like the mortarboard which serves for mixing plaster, and is bigger on top than on the bottom.2
But where did the Roman emperors get it? For one thing, the mortarboard was called a Justinianeion, because of its use by the Emperor Justinian, who introduced it from the East. He got his court trappings and his protocol from the monarchs of Asia, in particular the Grand Shah, from whom it can be traced to the khans of the steppes and the Mongol emperors, who wore the golden button of all wisdom on the top of the cap even as I do now. The shamans of the North also had it, and among the Laplanders it is still called "the Cap of the Four Winds." The four-square headpiece topped by the golden tassel—the emergent Flame of Full Enlightenment—also figures in some Buddhist and Lamaist representations. But you get the idea: this Prospero suit is pretty strong medicine—"rough magic" indeed!3
Another type of robe and headdress is described in Exodus and Leviticus and the third book of Josephus's Antiquities, i.e., the white robe and linen cap of the Hebrew priesthood, which have close resemblance to some Egyptian vestments.4 They were given up entirely, however, with the passing of the temple and were never even imitated after that by the Jews. Both their basic white and their peculiar design, especially as shown in the latest studies from Israel, are much like our own temple garments. This is not the time nor the place to pursue a subject in which Brother Packer wisely recommends a judicious restraint. I bring it up only to ask myself, "What if I appeared for an endowment session in the temple dressed in this outfit I'm wearing now?" There would be something incongruous about it, perhaps even comical. But why should that be so? The original idea behind both garments is the same—to provide a clothing more fitting to another ambience, action, and frame of mind than that of the warehouse, office, or farm. Doctrine and Covenants 109 describes the function and purpose of the temple as much the same as those of a university: A house where all seek learning by study and faith, by a discriminating search among the best books (no official list is given—you must search them out), and by constant discussion—diligently teaching "one another words of wisdom"; everybody seeking greater light and knowledge as all things come to be "gathered in one"—hence university (D&C 109:7, 14; 42:36).
Both the black and the white robes proclaim a primary concern for things of the mind and the spirit, sobriety of life, and concentration of purpose removed from the largely mindless, mechanical routines of your everyday world. Cap and gown announced that the wearer had accepted certain rules of living and been tested in special kinds of knowledge.
What is wrong, then, with the flowing robes? For one thing, they are somewhat theatrical and too easily incline the wearer, beguiled by their splendor, to masquerade and affectation. In the time of Socrates, the Sophists were making a big thing of their special manner of dress and delivery.5 It was all for show, of course, but it was "dressing for success" with a vengeance, for the whole purpose of the rhetorical brand of education which they inaugurated and sold at top prices to the ambitious youth was to make the student successful as a paid advocate in the law courts, a commanding figure in the public assemblies, or a successful promoter of daring business enterprises by mastering those then irresistible techniques of persuasion and salesmanship which the Sophists had to offer.
That was the classical education which Christianity embraced at the urging of the great St. Augustine. He had learned by hard experience that you can't trust revelation because you can't control it—the Spirit bloweth where it listeth (John 3:8); and what the church needed was something more available and reliable than that, something commodior et multitudini tutior ("handier and more reliable for the public") than revelation or even reason, and that is exactly what the rhetorical education had to offer.
At the beginning of this century, scholars were strenuously debating the momentous transition from Geist to Amt, from spirit to office, from inspiration to ceremony in the leadership of the early church, when the inspired leader, Peter, was replaced by the typical city bishop, an appointed and elected official—ambitious, jealous, calculating, power-seeking, authoritarian, an able politician, and a master of public relations. We have an immense literature on this in the Patrologia. This was St. Augustine's trained rhetorician. At the same time, the charismatic gifts (the gifts of the Spirit), not to be trusted, were replaced by rites and ceremonies that could be timed and controlled, all following the Roman Imperial model, as Alföldi has shown, including the caps and gowns.6
And down through the centuries the robes have never failed to keep the public at a respectful distance, inspire a decent awe for the professions, and impart an air of solemnity and mystery that has been as good as money in the bank. The four faculties of theology, philosophy, medicine, and law have been the perennial seedbeds, not only of professional wisdom, but of the quackery and venality so generously exposed to public view by Plato, Rabelais, Molière, Swift, Gibbon, A. E. Housman, H. L. Mencken, and others. What took place in the Greco-Roman as in the Christian world was that fatal shift from leadership to management that marks the decline and fall of civilizations.
At the present time, that grand old lady of the Navy, Captain Grace Hopper (the oldest commissioned officer in the Navy), is calling our attention to the contrasting and conflicting natures of management and leadership. No one, she says, ever managed men into battle. She wants more emphasis in teaching leadership. But leadership can no more be taught than creativity or how to be a genius. The Generalstab tried desperately for a hundred years to train up a generation of leaders for the German army; but it never worked, because the men who delighted their superiors, i.e., the managers, got the high commands, while the men who delighted the lower ranks, i.e., the leaders, got reprimands.
Leaders are movers and shakers, original, inventive, unpredictable, imaginative, full of surprises that discomfit the enemy in war and the main office in peace. For the managers are safe, conservative, predictable, conforming organization men and team players, dedicated to the establishment.
The leader, for example, has a passion for equality. We think of great generals from David and Alexander on down, sharing their beans or maza with their men, calling them by their first names, marching along with them in the heat, sleeping on the ground, and being first over the wall. A famous ode by a long-suffering Greek soldier, Archilochus, reminds us that the men in the ranks are not fooled for an instant by the executive type who thinks he is a leader.7
For the manager, on the other hand, the idea of equality is repugnant and even counterproductive. Where promotion, perks, privilege, and power are the name of the game, awe and reverence for rank is everything, the inspiration and motivation of all good men. Where would management be without the inflexible paper processing, dress standards, attention to proper social, political, and religious affiliation, vigilant watch over habits and attitudes, that gratify the stockholders and satisfy security?
"If you love me," said the greatest of all leaders, "you will keep my commandments. "If you know what is good for you," says the manager, "you will keep my commandments and not make waves." That is why the rise of management always marks the decline, alas, of culture. If the management does not go for Bach, very well, there will be no Bach in the meeting. If the management favors vile sentimental doggerel verse extolling the qualities that make for success, young people everywhere will be spouting long trade-journal jingles from the stand. If the management's taste in art is what will sell—trite, insipid, folksy kitsch—that is what we will get. If management finds maudlin, saccharine commercials appealing, that is what the public will get. If management must reflect the corporate image in tasteless, trendy new buildings, down come the fine old pioneer monuments.
To Parkinson's Law, which shows how management gobbles up everything else, he added what he calls the "Law of Injelitance": Managers do not promote individuals whose competence might threaten their own position; and so as the power of management spreads ever wider, the quality deteriorates (if that is possible). In short, while management shuns equality, it feeds on mediocrity.
On the other hand, leadership is an escape from mediocrity. All the great deposits of art, science, and literature from the past, on which all civilization has been nourished, come to us from a mere handful of leaders. For the qualities of leadership are the same in all fields, the leader being simply the one who sets the highest example; and to do that and open the way to greater light and knowledge, the leader must break the mold. "A ship in port is safe," says Captain Hopper speaking of management, "but that is not what ships were built for," she says, calling for leadership.
To quote one of the greatest of leaders, the founder of this institution, "There is too much of a sameness in this community. . . . I am not a stereotyped Latter-day Saint and do not believe in the doctrine . . . away with stereotyped 'Mormons'!"8 Good-bye all. True leaders are inspiring because they are inspired, caught up in a higher purpose, devoid of personal ambition, idealistic, and incorruptible.
There is necessarily some of the manager in every leader (what better example than Brigham Young himself?), as there should be some of the leader in every manager. Speaking in the temple to the temple management, the scribes and pharisees all in their official robes, the Lord chided them for one-sidedness: They kept careful accounts of the most trivial sums brought into the temple; but in their dealings they neglected fair play, compassion, and good faith, which happen to be the prime qualities of leadership.
The Lord insisted that both states of mind are necessary, and that is important: "These ought ye to have done [speaking of the bookkeeping], and not to leave the other undone." But it is the blind leading the blind, he continues, who reverse priorities, who "strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel" (Matthew 23:23—24). So vast is the discrepancy between management and leadership that only a blind man would get them backwards. Yet that is what we do. In that same chapter of Matthew, the Lord tells the same men that they do not really take the temple seriously, while the business contracts registered in the temple they do take very seriously indeed (Matthew 23:16—18). I am told of a meeting of very big businessmen in a distant place, who happened also to be the heads of stakes, where they addressed the problem of "How to stay awake in the temple." For them what is done in the house of the Lord is a mere quota-filling until they can get back to the real work of the world.
History abounds in dramatic confrontations between the two types, but none is more stirring than the epic story of the collision between Moroni and Amalickiah, the one the most charismatic leader, the other the most skillful manager, in the Book of Mormon. This is both timely and relevant—that's why I bring it in here. We are often reminded that Moroni "did not delight in the shedding of blood" and would do anything to avoid it, repeatedly urging his people to make covenants of peace and to preserve them by faith and prayer. He refused to talk about "the enemy." For him they were always "our brethren," misled by the traditions of their fathers. He fought them only with heavy reluctance, and he never invaded their lands, even when they threatened intimate invasion of his own. He never felt threatened, since he trusted absolutely in the Lord. At the slightest sign of weakening by an enemy in battle, Moroni would instantly propose a discussion to put an end to the fighting. The idea of total victory was alien to him—no revenge, no punishment, no reprisals, no reparations, even for an aggressor who had ravaged his country. He would send the beaten enemy home after battle, accepting their word for good behavior or inviting them to settle on Nephite lands, even when he knew he was taking a risk. Even his countrymen who fought against him lost their lives only while opposing him on the field of battle. There were no firing-squads, and former conspirators and traitors had only to agree to support his popular army to be reinstated. With Alma, he insisted that conscientious objectors keep their oaths and not go to war even when he desperately needed their help. Always concerned to do the decent thing, he would never take what he called an unfair advantage of an enemy. Devoid of personal ambition, the moment the war was over he "yielded up the command of his armies . . . and he retired to his own house . . . in peace" (Alma 62:43), though as the national hero he could have had any office or honor. For his motto was, "I seek not for power" (Alma 60:36), and as to rank he thought of himself only as one of the despised and outcast of Israel. If all this sounds a bit too idealistic, may I remind you that there really have been such men in history, hard as that is to imagine today.
Above all, Moroni was the charismatic leader, personally going about to rally the people, who came running together spontaneously to his title of liberty, the banner of the poor and downtrodden of Israel (Alma 46:12, 19—21). He had little patience with management. He let himself get carried away and wrote tactless and angry letters to the big men sitting on their "thrones in a state of thoughtless stupor" back in the capital (Alma 60:7). And when it was necessary he bypassed the whole system, and "altered the management of affairs among the Nephites," to counter Amalickiah's own managerial skill (Alma 49:11). Yet he could apologize handsomely when he learned that he had been wrong, led by his generous impulses into an exaggerated contempt for management; and he gladly shared with Pahoran the glory of the final victory, one thing that ambitious generals jealously reserve for themselves.
But if Moroni hated war so much, why was he such a dedicated general? He leaves us in no doubt on that head—he took up the sword only as a last resort. "I seek not for power, but to pull it down" (Alma 60:36). He was determined to "pull down [the] pride and . . . nobility" (Alma 51:18) of those groups who were trying to take things over. The "Lamanite brethren" he fought were the reluctant auxiliaries of Zoramites and Amalickiahites, his own countrymen. They "grew proud . . . because of their exceedingly great riches," and sought to seize power for themselves (Alma 45:24), enlisting the aid of "those who were in favor of kings . . . those of high birth . . . supported by those who sought power and authority over the people" (Alma 51:8). They were further joined by important "judges [who] had many friends and kindreds" (the right connections were everything) plus "almost all the lawyers and the high priests," to which were added "the lower judges of the land, and they were seeking for power" (3 Nephi 6:27; Alma 46:4).
All these Amalickiah welded together with immense managerial skill to form a single ultraconservative coalition who agreed to "support him and establish him to be their king," expecting that "he would make them rulers over the people" (Alma 46:5). Many in the church were won over by Amalickiah's skillful oratory, for he was a charming ("flattering" is the word used by the Book of Mormon) and persuasive communicator. He made war the cornerstone of his policy and power, using a systematic and carefully planned communications system of towers and trained speakers to stir up the people to fight for their rights, meaning Amalickiah's career. For while Moroni had kind feelings for the enemy, Amalickiah "did care not for the blood of his [own] people" (Alma 49:10). His object in life was to become king of both the Nephites and Lamanites, using the one to subdue the other (Alma 46:4—5). He was a master of dirty tricks, to which he owed some of his most brilliant achievements as he maintained his upward mobility by clever murders, high-powered public relations, and great executive ability. His competitive spirit was such that he swore to drink the blood of Alma, who stood in his way. In short, he was "one very wicked man" (Alma 46:9), who stood for everything that Moroni loathed.
It is at this time in Book of Mormon history that the word management makes its only appearances (three of them) in all the scriptures. First there was that time when Moroni on his own "altered the management of affairs among the Nephites" (Alma 49:11) during a crisis. Then there was Korihor, the ideological spokesman for the Zoramites and Amalickiahites, who preached that "every man fared in this life according to the management of the creature; therefore every man prospered according to his genius [ability, talent, brains, etc.], and . . . conquered according to his strength; and whatsoever a man did was no crime" (Alma 30:17). He raged against the government for taking people's property, that "they durst not enjoy their rights and privileges, Yea they durst not make use of that which [was] their own" (Alma 30:27—28). Finally, as soon as Moroni disappeared from the scene, the old coalition "did obtain the sole management of the government," and immediately did "turn their backs upon the poor" (Helaman 6:39), while they appointed judges to the bench who displayed the spirit of cooperation by "letting the guilty and the wicked go unpunished because of their money" (Helaman 7:5). (All this took place in Central America. the perennial arena of the Big People versus the Little People.)
Such was the management that Moroni opposed. By all means, brethren, let us take Captain Moroni for our model, and never forget what he fought for—the poor, the outcast, and the despised; and what he fought against—pride, power, wealth, and ambition; or how he fought—as the generous, considerate, and magnanimous foe, a leader in every sense.
At the risk of running overtime, I must pause and remind you that this story of which I have given just a few small excerpts is supposed to have been cooked up back in the 1820s and somewhere in the backwoods by some abysmally ignorant, disgustingly lazy, and shockingly unprincipled hayseed. Aside from a light mitigation of those epithets, that is the only alternative to believing that the story is true; for the situation is equally fantastic no matter what kind of author you choose to invent. This must be a true story.
That Joseph Smith is beyond compare the greatest leader of modern times is a proposition that needs no comment. Brigham Young recalled that many of the brethren considered themselves better managers than Joseph and were often upset by his economic naiveté. Brigham was certainly a better manager than the Prophet (or anybody else, for that matter), and he knew it; yet he always deferred to and unfailingly followed Brother Joseph all the way while urging others to do the same, because he knew only too well how small is the wisdom of men compared with the wisdom of God.
Moroni scolded the management for their "love of glory and the vain things of the world" (Alma 60:32), and we have been warned against the things of this world as recently as the last general conference.9 But exactly what are the things of the world? An easy and infallible test has been given us in the well-known maxim, "You can have anything in this world for money" If a thing is of this world you can have it for money; if you cannot have it for money, it does not belong to this world. That is what makes the whole thing manageable—money is pure number. By converting all values to numbers, everything can be fed into the computer and handled with ease and efficiency. "How much?" becomes the only question we need to ask. The manager "knows the price of everything and the value of nothing," because for him the value is the price.
Look around you here. Do you see anything that cannot be had for money? Is there anything here you couldn't have if you were rich enough? Well, for one thing you may think you detect intelligence, integrity, sobriety, zeal, character, and other such noble qualities. Don't the caps and gowns prove that? But hold on! I have always been taught that those are the very things that managers are looking for. They bring top prices in the marketplace.
Does their value in this world mean, then, that they have no value in the other world? It means exactly that. Such things have no price and command no salary in Zion; you cannot bargain with them because they are as common as the once-pure air around us; they are not negotiable in the kingdom because there everybody possesses all of them in full measure, and it would make as much sense to demand pay for having bones or skin as it would to collect a bonus for honesty or sobriety. It is only in our world that they are valued for their scarcity. "Thy money perish with thee," said Peter to a gowned quack (Simon Magus) who sought to include "the gift of God" in a business transaction (Acts 8:20).
The group leader of my high priests' quorum is a solid and stalwart Latter-day Saint who was recently visited by a young returned missionary who came to sell him some insurance. Cashing in on his training in the mission field, the fellow assured the brother that he knew that he had the right policy for him just as he knew the gospel was true. Whereupon my friend, without further ado, ordered him out of the house, for one with a testimony should hold it sacred and not sell it for money. The early Christians called Christemporoi those who made merchandise of spiritual gifts or church connections. The things of the world and the things of eternity cannot be thus conveniently conjoined; and it is because many people are finding this out today that I am constrained at this time to speak on this unpopular theme.
For the past year I have been assailed by a steady stream of visitors, phone calls, and letters from people agonizing over what might be called a change of majors. Heretofore the trouble has been the repugnance that the student (usually a graduate) has felt at entering one line of work while he would greatly prefer another. But what can they do? "If you leave my employ," says the manager, "what will become of you?" But today it is not boredom or disillusionment, but conscience that raises the problem. To seek ye first financial independence and all other things shall be added, is recognized as a rank perversion of the scriptures and an immoral inversion of values.
To question that sovereign maxim, one need only consider what strenuous efforts of wit, will, and imagination have been required to defend it. I have never heard, for example, of artists, astronomers, naturalists, poets, athletes, musicians, scholars, or even politicians coming together in high-priced institutes, therapy groups, lecture series, outreach programs, or clinics to get themselves psyched up by GO! GO! GO! slogans, moralizing clichés, or the spiritual exercises of a careful dialectic, to give themselves what is called a "wealth mindset" with the assurance that (in the words of Korihor) "whatsoever a man did was no crime" (Alma 30:17). Nor do those ancient disciplines lean upon lawyers, those managers of managers, to prove to the world that they are not cheating. Those who have something to give to humanity revel in their work, and do not have to rationalize, advertise, or evangelize to make themselves feel good about what they are doing. It is only when their art and their science become business oriented that problems of ethics ever arise. Look at TV. Behind the dirty work is always money. There would be no crime on Hill Street if people didn't have to have money. Paul was absolutely right: The drive for money is "the root of all evil" (1 Timothy 6:10); and he's quoting, incidentally, the old book of Enoch.
In my latest class, a graduating honors student in business management (who is here today) wrote this—the assignment was to compare one's self with some character in the Pearl of Great Price, and he quite seriously chose Cain:
Many times I wonder if many of my desires are too self-centered. Cain was after personal gain. He knew the impact of his decision to kill Abel. Now, I do not ignore God and make murderous pacts with Satan; however, I desire to get gain. Unfortunately, my desire to succeed in business is not necessarily to help the Lord's kingdom grow [now there's a refreshing bit of honesty]. Maybe I am pessimistic, but I feel that few businessmen have actually dedicated themselves to the furthering of the Church without first desiring personal gratification. As a business major, I wonder about the ethics of business—"charge as much as possible for a product which was made by someone else who was paid as little as possible." You live on the difference. As a businessman will I be living on someone else's industry and not my own? Will I be contributing to society or will I receive something for nothing, as did Cain? While being honest, these are difficult questions for me.
They have been made difficult by the rhetoric of our times. The Church was full of men in Paul's day teaching that gain is godliness and making others believe it. Today the black robe puts the official stamp of approval on that very proposition. But don't blame the College of Commerce! The Sophists, those shrewd business- and showmen, started that game 2,500 years ago, and you can't blame others for wanting to get in on something so profitable. The learned doctors and masters have always known which side their bread was buttered on and have taken their place in the line. Business and "Independent Studies," the latest of the late-comers, have filled the last gaps; and today, no matter what your bag, you can put in for a cap and gown. And be not alarmed that management is running the show—they always have.
Most of you are here today only because you believe that this charade will help you get ahead in the world. But in the last few years things have got out of hand. The economy, once the most important thing in our materialistic lives, has become the only thing. We have been swept up in a total dedication to the economy which, like the massive mudslides of our Wasatch Front, is rapidly engulfing and suffocating everything. If President Kimball is "frightened and appalled" by what he sees, I can do no better than to conclude with his words: "We must leave off the worship of modern-day idols and a reliance on the 'arm of flesh,' for the Lord has said to all the world in our day, 'I will not spare any that remain in Babylon' (D&C 64:24)."10 And Babylon is where we are.
In a forgotten time, before the Spirit was exchanged for the office and inspired leadership for ambitious management, these robes were designed to represent withdrawal from the things of this world—as the temple robes still do. That we may become more fully aware of the real significance of both is my prayer.

John Taylor’s Last Days Vision
This is a vision John Taylor saw of events that are still to come. From the journal of Wilford Woodruff (Dec 16, 1877).
NOTE: There are some that dispute whether or not it was John Taylor that had this vision. The vision does, in fact, come from the journal of Wilford Woodruff. It is verified that it was not Wilford Woodruff that had the vision. Many believe it to be John Taylor’s vision.
I went to bed as usual at about 7:30PM. I had been reading a revelation in the French language. My mind was calm, more so than usual if possible, so I composed myself for sleep, but could not. I felt a strange feeling come over me and apparently became partially unconscious. Still I was not asleep, nor exactly awake, with dreary feeling. The first thing that I recognized was that I was in the tabernacle of Ogden, Utah. I was sitting in the back part of the building for fear they would call on me to preach, which however they did, for after singing the second time they called me to the stand.
I arose to speak and said that I didn’t know that I had anything especially to say, except to bear my testimony of the Latter-day work, when all at once it seemed as if I was lifted out of myself and I said, “Yes, I have something to say and that is this: Some of my brethren have been asking, “What is becoming of us? What is the wind blowing?” I will answer you right here what is coming very shortly.”
I was then in a dream, immediately in the city of Salt Lake, and wandering around in the streets and in all parts of the city, and on the doors of the houses I found badges of mourning and I could not find a house but was in mourning. I passed my own house and found the same sign there, and I asked the question, “Is that me that is dead?” Someone gave me the answer, “No, you will get through it all.”
It seemed strange to me that I saw no person in the streets in all my wandering around the country. I seemed to be in their houses with the sick, but saw no funeral procession, nor anything of the kind, but the city looking still and as though the people were praying. And it seemed that they had controlled the disease, but what the disease was I did not learn; it was not made known to me. I then looked over the country, north, east, south, and west, and the same mourning was in every land and in every place.
The next thing I knew I was just this side of Omaha. It seemed though I was above the earth, and looking down upon it. As I passed along upon my way east I saw the road full of people, mostly women, with just what they could carry in bundles on their backs, traveling to the mountains on foot (THIS IS THE FREAKY PART!). I wondered how they would get through with such a small pack on their backs. It was remarkable to us[?] that there were so few men among them. It didn’t seem to me as though the cars were running, the rails looked rusty and the roads abandoned; and I have no conception of how I traveled as I looked down upon the people.
I continued east by the way of Omaha and Council Bluffs, which were full of disease. There were women everywhere. The state of Illinois and Missouri were in a tumult, men killing one another, women joining the fighting, family against family in the most horrid manner.
I imagined next that I was in Washington and I found desolation there. The White House was empty and the Halls of Congress the same, and everything in ruins. The people seemed to have left the city and left it to take care of itself.
I was in Baltimore. In the square where the Monument of 1812 stands in front of the Charles Hotel. I saw dead piled up so as to fill the street square. I saw mothers cutting the throats of their own children for their blood. I saw them suck it from their throats to quench their own thirst and then lie down and die. The water of Chesapeake Bay was stagnant, and the stench arising from it on account of their throwing their bodies into it so terrible, that the very smell carried death with it. I saw no man except they were dead or dying in the streets and very few women. Those I saw were crazy and in an ugly condition. Everywhere I went I beheld the same sights all over the city; it was terrible beyond description to look upon.
I thought this must be the end; but no, I was seemingly in an instant in the city of Philadelphia. There everything was still. No living soul was there to greet me. It seemed the whole city was without any inhabitants. In the south of Chestnut Street and in fact everywhere I went, the putrefaction of the dead caused such a stench that it was impossible for any living thing to breathe, nor did I see any living thing in the city.
Next I found myself in Broadway, in the city of New York, and there it seemed the people had done the best they could to overcome the disease, but in wandering down Broadway I saw the bodies of beautiful women lying, some dead and others in a dying condition, on the sidewalks. I saw men come out of cellars and ravish the persons of some that were yet alive and then kill them and rob their bodies of all the valuables they had upon them. Then before they could get back to the cellar they would roll over a time or two and die in agony. In some of the back streets I saw them kill some of their own offspring and eat their raw flesh, and in a few minutes die themselves. Everywhere I went I saw the same scene of horror and destruction and death and rapine.
No carriages, buggies, or cars were running; but death and destruction were everywhere. Then I saw fire start and just at that moment a mighty East wind sprang up and carried the flames over the city and it burned until there was not a single building left standing there, even down to the waters edge. Wharves and shipping all seemed to burn and follow in common destruction where the “great city” was a short time ago. The stench from the bodies that were burning was so great that it was carried a long distance cross the Hudson Bay and carried death and destruction wherever it penetrated. I cannot paint in words the horror that seemed to compass me about; it was beyond description of man.
I supposed this was the end; but it was not. I was given to understand the same horror was being enacted all over the country, east, west, north, and south. Few were left alive, still there were some.
Immediately after I seemed to be standing on the left bank of the Missouri River, opposite e the City of Independence, but there was no city. I saw the whole state of Missouri and Illinois and all of Iowa, a complete desert with no living being there. A short distance from the river however, I saw twelve men dressed in temple robes, standing in a square or nearly so (and I understood it represented the Twelve Gates of the New Jerusalem.) Their hands were uplifted in consecration of the ground and laying the corner stone of the temple. I saw myraids of angels hovering over them, and saw also an immense pillar of clouds over them and heard the angels singing the most heavenly music. The words were “Now is established the Kingdom of God and his Christ, which shall never more be thrown down.”
I saw people coming from the river and from the desert places a long way off to help build the temple and it seemed that hosts of angels all helped to get material to build with and I saw some of them who wore temple clothes come and build the temple and the city, and all the time I saw the great pillar of clouds hovering over the place.
Instantly, however, I found myself again in the tabernacle at Ogden. And yet, I could still see the building go on and I got quite animated in calling on the people in the tabernacle to listen to the beautiful music, for the angels were singing the same music I had heard before. “Now is established the Kingdom of God and his Christ, which shall never more be thrown down.”
At this I seemed to stagger back from the pulpit and Brother Francis D. Richards and some others caught my arm and prevented me from falling. Then I finished so abruptly. Still even then I had not fainted, but was simply exhausted.
They I rolled over in bed and awoke just as the city clock was striking twelve.
