My wife and family and I were just enjoying the lights on the grounds of the San Diego Temple a few weeks ago and had asked what the symbology of the 8 sided star is. This video answers the question:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishtar Eight - pointed star was the symbol of the goddess Ishtar. When you put a square within a square does that make an eight-sided star? Babylon had some pretty bizarre rites.
