I have always been intrigued by that phrase - and have always thought there was a comet that would fit perfectly to explain this phenomenon (see previous posts on Velikovsky's theory). It looks like a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. If it were close enough to the earth, it may have had a very large impact on the tides, etc of the Red Sea.

We have a big one (Comet Ison) coming thru in 2013. Pretty exciting stuff!
