I have always pictured Central American volcanoes going off during the three days of darkness.
If the heartland model is the correct model, I would love to know the source of the darkness (if there is a physical explanation for it, and not God's power only) for the mainland area.

Read about the New Madrid earthquake. From journals of the people who were there at the time its quite interesting. Also, seems like a similar quake happened before....
