I actually believe that Jesus must have been married. The reasoning is
very clear. His half-brother James was a Jewish Scribe or holyman. In
order for him to be of such an order and status, James would have been
forced to be married. However, under Jewish law, James could not married
untill all older siblings were married. Therefore Jesus had to be
married in order for James to be allowed to marry. If this is too much
for Christians to accept, then I have no help for them.

I lifted this from a nice article. Very interesting to note that there will also be an eclipse on Sept 13th, 2015 which is also the 29th of Elul for this year:
This happened at the end of every seven years on Elul 29 – the day right before Rosh Hashanah on the Biblical calendar.
So what does this have to do with us today?
Well, if you go back to the last day of the Shemitah year in 2001,
you will find that there was an absolutely horrifying stock market
crash.
On September 17th, 2001 (which was Elul 29 on the Jewish calendar),
we witnessed the greatest one day stock market crash in U.S. history up
to that time. The Dow fell an astounding 684 points, and it was a record that held for precisely seven years until the end of the next Shemitah year.
At the end of the next Shemitah year in 2008, another horrifying
stock market crash took place. On September 29th, 2008 the Dow
plummeted 777 points,
which still today remains the greatest one day stock market crash of
all time. It turns out that September 29th, 2008 corresponded with Elul
29 on the Jewish calendar – the precise day when the Bible calls for a
releasing of debts.
So on the very last day of the last two Shemitah years, the stock
market crashed so badly that it set a brand new all-time record.
And now we are in another Shemitah year. It began last fall, and it will end next September.
Could it be possible that we will see another historic market crash?
Author Jonathan Cahn has correctly pointed out that we should never
put God in a box. Just because something has happened in the past does
not mean that it will happen again. But we should not rule anything out
either.
Perhaps God is using His calendar to make a point. Cahn believes
that if we are going to see something happen, it will probably occur as
the Shemitah year comes to an end…
Cahn has pointed that, according to his research, the
worst of the worst usually happens at the end of the Shemitah year, not
at the beginning. In fact, the last day of the year, Elul 29 on the
Hebrew calendar, which will occur on Sept. 13, 2015, is the most dreaded
day.
The pattern revealed in “The Mystery of the Shemitah” is that the
beginning of the Shemitah’s impact is often subtle, but leads to a
dramatic climax.
“The beginning may mark a change in direction, even a foreshadow of
what will come to a crescendo at the Shemitah’s end,” he said.
And this time around, far more people are paying attention. Back in
2001 and 2008, most Americans had absolutely no idea what a “Shemitah
year” was. But now it is being talked about on some of the most
prominent alternative news websites on the Internet. For example, the
following is what Joseph Farah of WND has to say about the Shemitah year…
Farah believes the date Sept. 13, 2015 bears close
watching – though he is quick to admit he has no idea what, if anything,
will happen in America.
“A clear pattern has been established,” he says. “I don’t believe

The Shemitah year that we are in now does end on September 13th, 2015
– and that falls on a Sunday so the markets will be closed.
But what it comes to the Shemitah, we aren’t just looking at one particular day.
And it is very interesting to note that there will also be a solar
eclipse on September 13th, 2015. Over the past century, there have only
been two other times when a solar eclipse has corresponded with the end
of a Shemitah year. Those two times were in 1931 and 1987, and as
Jonathan Cahn has told WND, those solar eclipses foreshadowed major financial disasters…
In 1931, a solar eclipse took place on Sept. 12 – the end
of a “Shemitah” year. Eight days later, England abandoned the gold
standard, setting off market crashes and bank failures around the world.
It also ushered in the greatest monthlong stock market percentage crash in Wall Street history.
In 1987, a solar eclipse took place Sept. 23 – again the end of a “Shemitah” year. Less than 30 days later came “Black Monday” the greatest percentage crash in Wall Street history.
Is Cahn predicting doom and gloom on Sept. 13, 2015? He’s careful to
avoid a prediction, saying, “In the past, this ushered in the worst
collapses in Wall Street history. What will it bring this time? Again,
as before, the phenomenon does not have to manifest at the next
convergence. But, at the same time, and again, it is wise to take note.”
So what is going to happen this time?
We will just have to wait and see.
But without a doubt so many of the same patterns that we witnessed just prior to the financial crash of 2008 are happening again right before our very eyes.

Brushing aside dangerous precedents, Iran dumps the Dollar

In a significant economic move, Iran has declared that it is no longer going to use US Dollars in its foreign trade transactions.
“In trade exchanges with the foreign countries, Iran uses other
currencies, including Chinese Yuan, Euro, Turkish Lira, Russian Ruble
and South Korean Won,” Iran’s Central Bank announced on Saturday.
For those of us that aren’t bankers, economists or politicians, this
might not mean much. But if we look at how the United States has reacted
to oil-rich countries doing such a thing in the past, we quickly
realise just how alarming this development might be.
For example, with America’s 2003 invasion of Iraq now understood to
have been based on economic grounds rather than on WMDs, let us consider
the following precedent.
In his 2005 book Petrodollar Warfare, author William R. Clark makes an interesting revelation on page 28.
“On September 24, 2000, Saddam Hussein allegedly emerged from a
meeting of his government and proclaimed that Iraq would soon transition
its oil export transactions to the euro currency.”
By 2002, Saddam had fully converted to a Petroeuro – in essence, dumping the dollar.
This was a crisis for the U.S in numerous ways: firstly, because Iraq
used the Dollar in its oil trade and, with some 112 billion barrels of
oil, represented the fifth largest proven oil reserves in the world.
On March 19, 2003, George W. Bush announced the commencement of a full scale invasion of Iraq.
An article in Global Research finds a similar precedent shortly before NATO’s 2011 war against Libya. According to a Russian article titled “Bombing of Lybya –
Punishment for Gaddafi for His Attempt to Refuse US Dollar,” Gaddafi
made a similarly bold move: he initiated a movement to refuse the dollar
and the euro, and called on Arab and African nations to use a new
currency instead, the gold dinar. Gaddafi suggested establishing a united African continent, with
its 200 million people using this single currency. … The initiative was
viewed negatively by the USA and the European Union, with French
president Nicolas Sarkozy calling Libya a threat to the financial
security of mankind; but Gaddafi continued his push.
Anyone familiar with what followed this can understand how Iran may become targeted for similar action.
With oil prices hovering around $50 per barrel and the U.S shale
industry already hurting, is it inconceivable that those with vested
interests may be keen to play a part in drumming up another manufactured
argument for war?
As we see in the paragraphs above, there is certainly precedent.
The neoconservative political forces in Washington D.C are in lockstep with Israel’s ruling Likud Party in calling Iran an imminent national security threat.
The problem with this for the U.S and Israel is that Iran is not Iraq, or Libya.
Iran is a major regional power with close security ties to Russia and
China. It has a defence pact with Syria and a dangerous alliance with
Hezbollah (an army with 50,000 rockets ready to fire at Israel’s major
cities).
Attacking Iran would guarantee a full-scale regional war in a part of
the world where oil accounts for more than 30% of the world’s total
supply.
Doom and gloom aside, this move is likely to raise many eyebrows in the energy sector and financial markets alike.

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Five
centuries after burning thousands of Jews at the stake, forcing them to
convert to Christianity or expelling them, Portugal is granting
citizenship rights to their descendants as part of an attempt to make
amends.
The Portuguese Cabinet on Thursday approved a law
offering dual citizenship to the descendants of those Sephardic Jews —
the term commonly used for those who once lived in the Iberian
peninsula. The effective date of the law will be made public soon and
similar legislation in Spain is awaiting final legislative approval.

The Portuguese rights will apply to those who can
demonstrate "a traditional connection" to Portuguese Sephardic Jews,
such as through "family names, family language, and direct or collateral
ancestry."
Like Spain, Portugal says its sole reason for
granting citizenship is to redress a historic wrong. "There is no
possibility to amend what was done," Portuguese Justice Minister Paula
Teixeira da Cruz said. "I would say it is the attribution of a right."
The measure is the latest step in Portugal's modern
efforts to atone for its past harsh treatment of Jews, whose ranks once
numbered in the tens of thousands, but have been reduced to only about
1,000 today.
In 1988, then-president Mario Soares met with
members of Portugal's Jewish community and formally apologized for the
Inquisition. In 2000, the leader of Portugal's Roman Catholics publicly
apologized for the suffering imposed on Jews by the Catholic Church, and
in 2008 a monument to the dead was erected outside the Sao Domingos
church where the massacre of thousands of Jews began at Easter in 1506.
Jose Ribeiro e Castro, a lawmaker who was involved
in drafting the legislation, sees the persecution of Sephardic Jews as a
"stain" on Portuguese history. He said he was contacted on social media
by Sephardic Jews abroad who suggested granting citizenship rights to
descendants of their persecuted ancestors.
"We wish it had never happened," Ribeiro e Castro
said. "Given that it did happen, and that it can be put right, we
thought we ought to do so." Applicants will be vetted by Portuguese
Jewish community institutions, as well as by government agencies. They
will have to say whether they have a criminal record. Jewish community
leaders say they expect the application procedure to take four months.
"We regard it as an act of justice," Michael
Rothwell, a delegate of the Committee of the Jewish Community of Oporto,
which is one of the vetting organizations, said of the new law. He
described it as "another important step toward reconciliation with the
past."
Rothwell said the Portuguese legislation appears
simpler than Spain's plan, which would require testing of candidates for
their knowledge about Spain. The Jewish Community of Oporto has
received about 100 requests from all over the world for certificates
attesting ties to a Sephardic Jewish Community of Portuguese origin and
say they expect to receive many more.
There is no accepted figure for the global
Sephardic population. James Harlow, a descendant of Sephardic Jews who
lives in San Jose, California, intends to apply for Portuguese
citizenship because his Silicon Valley business is looking to expand
abroad. Portugal, a member of the 28-nation European Union, offers an
entry into a huge market.
"Citizenship makes travel, talent recruitment and
operations easier," the 52-year-old said in emailed replies to AP
questions. Harlow says his ancestors were advisers to the royal family
when Portugal established an empire that would stretch from Brazil to
Africa and India. His ancestors refused to convert and left Portugal in
1496.
Spain expelled the Jews in 1492, and historians
that some 80,000 of them crossed the border into Portugal. In 1496, King
Manuel I, eager to find favor with Spain's powerful Catholic rulers,
Ferdinand and Isabella, and marry their daughter Isabella of Aragon,
gave the Jews 10 months to convert or leave. When they opted to leave,
Manuel issued a new decree prohibiting their departure and forcing them
to embrace Roman Catholicism as "New Christians."
Many converted, but kept their true beliefs and
Jewish religious practices hidden. The "New Christians" adopted new
names, inter-married and even ate pork in public to prove their devotion
to Catholicism. Some Jews, though, kept their traditions alive,
secretly observing the sabbath at home then going to church on Sunday.
They circumcised their sons and quietly observed Yom Kippur, calling it
in Portuguese the "dia puro," or pure day.
The New Christians were at the mercy of popular
prejudice. In the Easter massacre of Jewish converts in 1506 in Lisbon,
more than 2,000 Jews are believed to have been murdered. The Portuguese
Inquisition, established in 1536, could be more cruel than its Spanish
counterpart. It persecuted, tortured and burned at the stake tens of
thousands of Jews.

The Pentagon Is Stuffing Caves in Norway Full of Tanks
The
Pentagon is sending tanks, armored vehicles and containers full of
other military gear to caves in Norway. It’s all for the U.S. Marine
Corps, which wants to update and expand its Scandinavian stockpile.
The
Corps has stashed weapons and equipment in the Norwegian countryside
since the 1980s. With this setup, Marines can fly in and be ready for a
fight in no time.
In addition, the Pentagon saves money by not
having to keep a large force in Norway year-round. Washington already
spends billions each year running huge bases across Europe.
But
in the past, Marines rushing toward the sound of gunfire might have
lacked firepower. Five years ago, Humvees with machine guns and missiles
were the only combat vehicles in Norwegian storage, according to tables
in an official Marine Corps handbook.
Now, the military is
adding M-1A1 Abrams tanks and a number of Assault Breacher Vehicles to
the bunkers. The latter are heavily armored tracks designed to blow up
minefields and push through other obstacles.
The Pentagon is also
adding M-88 tank retrievers, amphibious assault vehicles, up-armored
Humvees and various upgraded trucks to the cache. The Corps expects to
finish moving the new materiel under the mountains by the end of the

high in the area of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that occured in Japan

The Yomiuri reports that an increase in
the squid catch prior to the March 11th earthquake confirms old folk
beliefs about the quake predicting powers of squid:
Some
fishermen believe a large haul of squid might be a sign that a major
earthquake is about to strike, a theory one expert called “intriguing.”
A
fishery cooperative in Komatsushima in the prefecture said about 200
tons of squid were landed during the peak months of January and
February–between two and four times more than in a regular year. A
fishery co-op in northern Tokushima reported this winter’s squid catch
of 70 tons was triple that of a standard year.
Most of the prefecture’s squid haul is netted between northeastern Shikoku and Wakayama Prefecture.
A
fishery cooperative in Arida, Wakayama Prefecture, which is across the
water from Tokushima, also hauled in 700 kilograms, triple a normal
season’s catch.
According to Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
Ministry statistics, squid fishermen in Tokushima brought in 491 tons of
the cephalopods in 1994–just before the Hanshin quake–which was 1.4
times the 1993 catch and 1.9 times the 1992 catch.
The
“fisherman’s tale” that the size of a squid catch can foretell
earthquakes gained traction, and reports of the phenomenon continue to
be made at briefings on possible precursors to earthquakes.
“There
were amazing hauls of squid just before the Hanshin quake, and also
just before the 1946 Nankai Earthquake,” one veteran fisherman from
southern Tokushima said.
Another was unable to hide his amazement at the possible connection.
“I
thought it was odd that we got such a huge haul,” he said. “I’d heard
that squid catches increase before a major earthquake, but….”
A
squid research offered an alternative explanation: last year was quite
warm, so the hatching rate of squid eggs would have been greater than
usual.

President Hinckley, in the Sep 1985 General Women's conference, said,
"Yours may be the spirit of prophecy. That may sound strange to some of
you. Miriam in the Old Testament is spoken of as a prophetess. Peter, on
the day of Pentecost, repeated the words of the prophet Joel. Can
anyone doubt that many women have a special intuitive sense, even a
prescient understanding of things to come?"
That being said, Julie's message is that the day to prepare is now, to
listen to the prophet, read and recognize the signs of the times, and do
not delay any longer in preparing yourself spiritually or temporally.
If you have been procrastinating the day of your repentance, now is the
time to learn to discern and fine-tune the light of Christ, that all
people have been born with.
She does not give dates, but strongly suggests that the 7 years of
turmoil as prophesied of, including their plagues, civil wars, foreign
invasions, natural disasters and all, will commence shortly before the
next US President is inaugurated, which would give us roughly two years.
(Granted, the inauguration could be delayed past Jan 20, as was nearly
done in Bush/Gore). Her message is although the prophets have been
warning us for decades, the time is now, do not delay your preparation
any longer.

All of prophetic scripture talks of the pride cycle. One nation, once favored of God getting trounced by another nation, who gets trounced by another nation until no one nation is left standing. We are about to go into this trouncing cycle in spades. God uses the wicked to drive and/or the wicked. Sometimes, the wicked are allowed to trounce on the good guys, but then other wicked folk come to trounce on the other wicked folk. The OT and BoM is full of it. The BofM speaks very clearly of what happens when the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled and the people who were once chosen (in the Church and out of it) are filled with pride and are corrupt. The gospel is then taken from them and given to the Jews and the heathen nations in the final wrap before "the end" (the one that everyone thinks of - but gets confused with the coming of Jesus to Jerusalem - when you talk of the end of the world - which is still a decade or two away).
I know what will cause (is causing) the great Bear (Russia) to come roaring out of her hibernation den. I know that she will come angry and the attack will be sudden and bitter for the ones who awoke her.
I have wondered what will cause the 10 tribes to break out of their 2500 year self-hiatus. Will it be a command from God to return through the prophets that we know are working among them? Will it be a report that their brothers in Israel and throughout the earth are in line for the final purge that satan has planned for them - and they come to do God's vengeance upon those who molest and make afraid? Will they come because the mechanism that took the portion of the earth that they were on so many years ago, is automatically set in motion according to cosmic mechanics (Jubilee year?) when the great dragon once again dances in the sky?
The reasons for so many migrations of God's children have been set in motion decades and even centuries prior. In the case of Joseph Smith Sr. having to leave the farm in Vermont was due to a volcano that formed generations before and then erupted in a specific year, causing a three or more year cold snap that forced many farmers out of the cold Vermont hills to the lower, more fertile valleys in upstate NY. Providence at work.
The migration of the Saints from Missouri to Illinois and points east, was set in motion when slaves were imported into the US in the 1600-1800's and the land which was the home to ancient foundational sites such as the Garden of Eden, Adam-ondi-Ahman and many others suddenly was thrust into the forefront of American politics as the swing state of the pro-slavery movement. Massachussetts was then mobilized to send 5,000 families to the rough frontier state to push the population over the tipping point towards an anti-slavery political stance. A group of humble people just wanting to live their lives in peace and relative tranquility as they moved west from Ohio and NY were caught in the middle of this raging political battle. They came out the losers in the short term. The ruffians who threw them out of the state were wiped out in the Civil War as God fought the Saints' battles on His terms.
Shortly, as persecution bears down again on the Saints, God will send a people to destroy the remaining vestiges of (corrupt) government from the face of the land, just as prophesied in the Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 12:

This terrible shaking of the earth comes shortly - and most of the people affected by it will be thrust back into the stone age almost overnight. People who are spoiled and not used to going without, will not be able to handle the reality of it. War for the remaining assets will ensue. Since Babylon shall fall with a mighty fall first, others who want the spoils will sweep in to take what they feel is theirs. Incidentally, I just learned the other day from a commenter, that Russia teaches their youth that Alaska was only leased to the USA, not sold for $67 million back in Seward's day. Alaska is a prize as most of the known oil reserves are un-tapped up there. Not to mention all of the other wealth that has not been taken out of her.

Verse 24 describes the effects of nuclear fallout and bombing.
To end this, here is what may drive China over here..... Our clean air, water and resources (such as food and now oil). I do not mention several trillion in unpaid debt. We are a prize for a country like China - they have a pretext, and they only await the right opportunity to act on their "doctrine" of first right, etc. Here is the article that got me spun up - and explains what just may cause them to be motivated to expand their frontiers:
Beijing’s mayor, Wang Anshun, has called the city “unliveable” because of its noxious smog, according to state media.
“To establish a first-tier, international, liveable and harmonious
city, it is very important to establish a system of standards, and
Beijing is currently doing this,” he said last Friday, according to the China Youth Daily newspaper.
“At the present time, however, Beijing is not a liveable city.”
Anshun’s speech came days before the market research company
Euromonitor International announced, in its findings on the global
tourism market in 2013, that tourism to Beijing had declined by 10% from the year before due to pollution and a countrywide economic slowdown.
The company’s top 100 city destination rankings, released on Tuesday,
ranked Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok in its top three spots,
followed by London and Paris. Beijing ranked 34th, in between
Johannesburg and Sofia, Bulgaria.
Wang, a former official in the state-controlled petroleum sector and
in north-west China’s Gansu province, said the pollution was caused by
its distribution of polluting factories and skyrocketing ownership of
motor vehicles. In his speech, he demanded that Beijing’s polluting
factories shut down entirely rather than “irresponsibly relocate” to
neighbouring areas of Hebei and Tianjin.
In 2014, Beijing authorities closed 392 companies for causing pollution and took 476,000 old vehicles off the roads, Wang said.
He added that despite the choking pollution, Beijing’s biggest
problem was population control, claiming the influx of migrant labour
put strains on the city’s infrastructure. The city has 21.5 million
residents and is growing at a rate of more than 350,000 a year.
In September 2013, China’s cabinet introduced a sweeping
anti-pollution plan, which included prohibiting the construction of new
coal-fired power plants in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the
country’s three most important cities.
“This represents the government is strict with science,
truth-seeking, responsible for the people and determined to pursue
human-centred administration, improve the environment and safeguard
people’s health rights,” said the announcement.
Yet 18 months on, the plan appears to be taking slow effect.
Beijing is still shrouded by smog on most days. Authorities announced
that in 2014, particulate matter 2.5 – pollutants most dangerous to
human health – dropped by 4%, falling just short of the government’s 5%
reduction target.
I really respect what this LDS man has to say about the nature of a blood moon. I cannot discount it - just as I cannot discount Velikovski's theories in light of everything that has been revealed by modern Prophets.
I also cannot discount the fact that we approach the 50th, 50th Jubilee and what important events the previous blood moons have heralded.
I still throw this out there - because it neither disagrees with a logical stance, nor with revealed religion. The Spirit will have to be the tie-breaker after wanting to know badly enough. The Lord NEVER gives anything away for free - for easily-obtained information comes with damnation if it is carelessly given and carelessly tossed to the side as something of naught.

reference to an eclipse or a reddish colored moon, as the currently
popular blood moon scenario goes. What the ancients saw and what the
prophets report is the moon becoming incandescent,
glowing red like a cinder in a fire, due to the electrical interaction
between it and an intruding body. This only happens in a near-collision
scenario. It's caused by electromagnetic energy, much like the
microwaves that heat and cook our food in an oven.
The current blood moon flap completely ignores the catastrophe scenario.

the signs and what most today think are signs. The true signs accompany a
planetary near-collision, such as that Joseph Smith called "a comet, a
planet, etc." These are nothing
like the signs identified by most today: earthquakes, tsunamis,
hurricanes . . . and yes, blood moons. Such events are discreet events,
with no apparent relation to one another, and they happen over a period
of many years.
The
true signs are all realated to one, central cause: an approaching
planetary body that looks and behaves like a comet. Each of the
prophecied signs happen one on the heels of the other, sometimes
concurrently. Beginning to end, such an event lasts only three or four
months. As you can readily see, this scenario is nothing like the blood
moons are predicted to be, covering over a year in time.

Judges May Not Be Affiliated With Boy Scouts of America, California High Court Rules
If
you belong to the Boy Scouts of America, you’re not fit to be a judge in
California, that state’s Supreme Court has decided. The court announced
on Friday that all seven of its justices had voted to accept the
recommendation of its ethics advisory committee that places the Boy
Scouts among the organizations judges may not join. The ban applies to
“any organization that practices invidious discrimination on the basis
of race, sex, gender, religion, national origin, ethnicity or sexual
orientation.” The Scouts have dropped the ban on membership for openly
“gay” boys under 18 but still prohibit homosexual and lesbian adults
from serving as staff or voluntary leaders. The
state’s high court has banned judges from belonging to groups that
discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation since 1996, but made an
exception for nonprofit youth organizations. The Supreme Court’s
Advisory Committee on the Code of Judicial Ethics in February
recommended eliminating the exception to enhance public confidence in
the judiciary. The court's unanimous decision did not mention the Boy
Scouts of America, the Los Angeles Times reported, though there
was little doubt that it was the intended target. The ethics advisory
committee wrote the exception was “anomalous and inconsistent” with
development in the law regarding same-sex relationships, citing the
Supreme Court's decision in 2013 to overturn the federal Defense of
Marriage Act and to allow a lower court ruling to stand striking down
Proposition 8, the law adopted by California voters in 1988 to limit
marriage to a union between one man and one woman. The
committee invited public input on the proposed prohibition last year and
received more than 600 comments, including a strongly worded message
from 104 California attorneys objecting to the ban. "The proposal
creates an unconstitutional test for public office, threatens the
constitutional rights of California judges, and states unabashedly that
it is designed to punish the Boy Scouts of America by prohibiting
California judges from participating in that group's activities," the
attorneys stated in a 10-page e-mail. Barbara Kronlund, a judge in the
San Joaquin County Superior Court and the mother of a Scout, wrote to
express her concern that the ruling would lead to the "infringement of
my right to free exercise of religion as guaranteed by the 1st
Amendment." Judge John Vineyard, who presides in Riverside County,
described himself as a Superior Court judge, a Scoutmaster, an Eagle
Scout, and a Scout parent. "Those roles are not, and have never been,
incompatible," he wrote to the court. The change was endorsed by the
California Judges Association. Justice James Humes, an openly gay man
who sits on the state’s Court of Appeals, argued the exception should be
abandoned "because it incites distrust in judicial impartiality,
demeans gay and lesbian judges and is offensive and harmful." There are
47 states that prohibit judges from membership in organizations that
discriminate, and 22 of them define that to include bias based on sexual
orientation. California was the only one that made an exception for
youth groups. “One other exception — belonging to a military
organization — was eliminated as well, because the U.S. armed forces no
longer restrict military service based on sexual orientation,” said
Justice Richard Fybel, an appeals court judge who is also chairman of
the ethics committee. “The only remaining exception to the general rule
is membership in a religious organization,” Fyberg said. But who knows how long that exception
will last? If a judge’s membership in an organization that does not
admit gay or lesbians “incites distrust in judicial impartiality,” then
what of a Catholic judge, who belongs to church that does not ordain
women to the priesthood, or a Lutheran judge if his church bans openly
gay or lesbian men and women from teaching Sunday School. To be sure,
the U.S. Constitution guarantees religious freedom and prohibits a
religious test for public office. But courts self-ordained to stamp out
the scourge of “invidious discrimination” all across the land may yet
brush aside even those lesser considerations.
